La Hora

To ask what time it is say:  ¿Qué hora es?

To say the time on the hour say:  Son las (2-12). For example: 2:00 Son las dos. 5:00 Son las cinco. 8:00 Son las ocho.

To add minutes :01 - :29to the hour: current hour  Use the current hour y + the number of minutes For example: 3:05 Son las tres y cinco. 3:10Son las tres y diez. 3:20Son las tres y veinte.

For half past the hour:  Use y media for half past the hour For example: 3:30Son las tres y media.

To add minutes :31 - :59: next hour  Use the next hour menos (or minus the minutes till the next hour) For example: tres 2:35Son las tres menos veinticinco. tres 2:50Son las tres menos diez.

To indicate a.m. or p.m.  Use:  de la mañana in the morning  de la tardein the afternoon  de la nocheat night

When using quarter after and quarter till the hour: Son las (current hour) y cuarto. It’s a quarter after (current hour). 2:15Son las dos y cuarto. Son las (next hour) menos cuarto. It’s a quarter till (next hour). 2:45Son las tres menos cuarto.

The exception is one o’clock:  To say it is 1:00:  Es la una.  The rules for 2-12 o’clock apply for adding minutes to one o’clock. For example: 1:10Es la una y diez. 1:50Son las dos menos diez.
