Branching Out: College and Career Readiness in Montana Montana K20 Data Project

K20 Data Project $3.9 million dollar grant Grant runs through June 30, 2015 Partnering with OCHE

K20 Data Project Establish data linkages between K-12 education and postsecondary partners by creating an electronic student transcript repository for K-12 education and connecting to postsecondary data for Montana high school students who enroll in the MUS system.

K20 Data Project Create an Interagency Data Governance Council which includes representatives from the Office of Public Instruction, the Montana University System and high schools across the state of Montana. This Data Governance Council is charged with establishing the technical, management and communications systems to collaboratively manage, link and analyze K20 education data.

K20 Data Project Use current GEMS functionality and reporting tools to access data about Montana students longitudinally to learn more about their achievement in high school and their success in postsecondary education.

Two Main Functions of K20 Data Project Provide electronic transcript service to colleges – Transcripts sent to OPI, then OPI sends them on to transcript service – Transcript information will be used to further research student achievement Provide mechanism for effective data transport between districts and OPI

High School Transcript Working Group Comprised of high school and university representatives Met October – December 2012 Recommended required data elements for a MT standard transcript to Board of Public Education

Required Data Elements Must be submitted on a transcript, regardless of whether it is submitted electronically or on paper to universities Are primarily already available from high schools’ current SIS

Approved Data Elements Transcript Prototype G:\Montana K20\Approved Data Elements Transcript Prototype.pdf

Optional Data Elements Can be added by the high school if desired or necessary – not required by Administrative Rule – Include Immunization Type and Date, among other elements

Approved and Optional Data Elements Transcript Prototype G:\Montana K20\Approved and Optional Data Elements Transcript Prototype.pdf

Connection with GEMS Student high school transcript data will be stored in GEMS when submitted by schools. Once students have enrolled in the MUS, data will be sent back to OPI on regular basis and stored in GEMS for comparison and research.

Data Governance Council Will create rules and procedures regarding data collection, analysis and reporting Will advise on data use, management and communication with the education stakeholder community Will look at research needs surrounding student achievement in postsecondary education

Data Governance Council Made up of representatives from OPI, the MUS, OCHE, and high schools across the state Membership: Data Governance Council Membership.docData Governance Council Membership.doc Will begin work in January 2013 and continue through end of grant in June 2015
