European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Douglas Evans European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity The EUNIS habitats classification - Proposed changes for forests & heaths

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Proposals based on two contracts and discussions between authors, EEA & ETC/BD

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Divide Merge Merge & re-divide Delete Name changes No completely new habitats proposed Types of change proposed

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity ‘Divide’ Existing unitProposedComment B1.5 Coastal dune heaths Atlantic and Baltic coastal Empetrum heaths 2140 Decalcified fixed dunes with Empetrum nigrum Atlantic coastal Calluna and Ulex heaths H2150 Atlantic decalcified fixed dunes of the Calluno-Ulicetea

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Existing unitProposedComment G1.6 Fagus woodland Fagus woodland on non-acid soils 12 alliances Fagus woodland on acid soils 3 alliances ‘Divide’

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity ‘Merge’ Existing units ProposedComment F5.1 Arborescent matorral Arborescent matorral and maquis tall shrub communities that are dominated by phanerophytes F5.2 Maquis No forest proposals

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity ‘Merge & divide’ Existing unitsProposedComment F3.1 Temperate thickets and scrub and scrub F3.2 Submediterranean deciduous thickets and scrub Lowland to montane temperate and submediterranean Juniperus scrub 3 alliances Temperate bramble scrub2 alliances Lowland to montane temperate and submediterranean genistoid scrub 11 alliances Temperate forest clearing scrub2 alliances Temperate and submediterranean thorn scrub 17 alliances Low steppic scrub2 alliances

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Existing unitsProposedComment G3.4 Pinus sylvestris woodland south of the taiga G3.5 Pinus nigra woodland Temperate continental Pinus sylvestris woodland 6 alliances Temperate and Submediterranean montane Pinus sylvestris-Pinus nigra woodland 9 alliances Mediterranean-montane Pinus sylvestris-nigra woodland 6 alliances ‘Merge & divide’

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity ‘Delete’ G1.D Fruit and nut tree orchards G2.9 Evergreen orchards and groves Are not woodlands and should be removed could go to ‘I Regularly or recently cultivated agricultural, horticultural and domestic habitats’

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity G4 Mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland Proposed to remove this section which is difficult to relate to floristic classifications and which is not used in European Forest Types

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Change name CodeExisting nameProposed name F5.4Spanish-broom ([Spartium junceum]) fields Spartium junceum scrub G1.1Riparian and gallery woodland, with dominant [Alnus], [Betula], [Populus] or [Salix] Temperate and boreal softwood riparian woodland G1.8Acidophilous [Quercus]- dominated woodland Acidophilous Quercus woodland G2.2Eurasian continental sclerophyllous woodland Mainland lauriphyllous woodland

European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Convention for names 1: Adopt brief and clear names for the habitat types. 2: Names within a group of related habitat types should be mutually exclusive with regard to, for example, biogeographic zone or soil type 3: Do not use square brackets to indicate scientific names. If included, scientific taxon names should be in italics. 4: Use a standardized naming. Example: use only the name heaths instead of both heaths and heath
