Criteria for EHWB pg 16 Criteria reference number & definition Minimum Evidence Pointers to good practice Schools need to consider Case study How SEAL can help

SEAL SEAL & EHWB are closely linked SEAL is part of a wider delivery mechanism for EHWB and should be used within the whole school approach of the Healthy Schools Programme

SEAL links to Healthy School Status Whole School Approach SEAL uses the whole school approach. If you are involved in the HS programme you will be familiar with the 10 areas of the whole school approach: 1.Policy Development 2.Assessing, recording, and reporting pupils’ achievement 3.Partnerships with parent/carers and local communities 4.Giving pupils a voice 5.Curriculum planning & work with outside agencies 6.School Culture and Environment 7.Staff professional development needs, health and welfare 8.Leadership management and managing change 9.Teaching and learning 10.Provision of pupil support services

Example of EHWB Criteria pg 44:- Healthy Schools Criteria:- 4.8 Participation of children and young people Provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in school activities and responsibilities to build their confidence and self esteem. Minimum Evidence ………. Pointers to Good Practice…………….. Schools need to consider (8 points) eg:- Do our policies, systems and procedures within the school promote the self-esteem of all children and young people in the school? Do we involve our children and young people in deciding on and providing support at all points of transition?

How SEAL can help? “Developing self-esteem and self-confidence are essential elements of SEAL through encouraging participation and taking responsibility. All the social and emotional skills of SEAL underpin effective participation but particularly those within self-awareness and social skills” “ Children and young people are encouraged to participate fully in shaping their own learning and the learning environment” EHWB Guidance pg 45
