Captain John Smith’s Voyages In your group, discuss what you see from John Smith’s voyages. Talk about the places he went, the amount of time he was gone and what kind of things he might have seen. Now it’s your turn. Start your voyage toward the nearby Paspahegh Village to learn more about life in the New World. The Paspahegh Indian tribe live near Jamestown and interact with the colonists. As your voyage takes you toward their village, notice the village is empty. This is your chance to explore and see how the Paspahegh live. When you are finished, come back and prepare to share what you saw with the other colonists. The Paspahegh Village Take a slow, careful walk through the Paspahegh Village. As you are walking, talk with your group about the things you see and what you might hear. Go to the blog and find the post titled “The Paspahegh Village” to add your thoughts.

Inventory of Supplies The Paspahegh Indians find supplies around the area. To help your fellow colonists survive, make a list of items the Paspahegh use to survive. Once you have made your list, organize the items so you can share the list with other colonists. One way to do this is through a graph. Review of Pictograph Review of Bar Graph Make your own graph

Pictograph Recall that a Pictograph is a way to organize information using pictures. Here is a sample: Weather in June From this pictograph we see that it was sunny for 7 days in June and rainy for 5 days. A pictograph can easily help us see how often something occurs. Can you get the same information from both graphs? Bar Graph A Bar Graph is similar to a Pictograph except it uses bars instead of pictures. Can you get the same information from both graphs?

Inventory of Supplies On your graph: 1. Use what you know about graphs and your choice of computer program to make an inventory of the supplies you have found in the Paspahegh Village. On your graph: Did you label each axis correctly? Did you include all the important information? Is it easy to read? Write at least three things you can tell from the graph? 2. Use of Natural Resources The land in the New World was abundant with Natural Resources. These resources are still important to Virginia’s economy. Before looking at what natural resources the Paspahegh used, you should understand just what is a Natural Resource. In this first video, watch the first 2 minutes and stop when they begin talking about the tobacco crops. Pay close attention to the definition of a Natural Resource. Pay close attention to the different types of Natural Resources found throughout Virginia. Video 2

Use of Natural Resources Now that you know what a Natural Resource is, let’s see what kind of resources the Paspahegh use. Take a walk through the village. Make a list of all the natural resources you see. Decide how the Paspahegh use each resource (for what purpose). Determine if the resource would be useful to colonists and why.

Use of Natural Resources There are many ways to organize information. You saw how graphs were used to count items. Charts can also be used to keep information organized. Choose a piece of software to create a chart to organize your list of natural resources and how they are used by the Paspahegh and colonists. Add a column to your chart to show how we might use that same resource today. Your chart could look something like this: Natural Resource Paspahegh Colonists Us When you are done making your chart, go to the blog and look for the post titled “Virginia Resources” and add your ideas.

Advice for the Colonists Wow! We sure have learned a lot about the Paspahegh Indians! Now that you have seen how the Paspahegh Indians live and the resources they use, it’s time to return to the colonists in Jamestown. Talk with your group to decide the most important advice you can give to the colonists. Go to the blog and find the post titled “Advice for colonists” and add your ideas.
