1.Before 1763 (Sect. 5.2) (exam) French and Indian War. - Washington starts the war at Fort Duquesne. - Wars turning point is taking of Canada and then the Treaty of Paris. * Britain gains all the land that France held in North America. * Britain deep in debt from the war.

2. Early British Actions in the Colonies (sect. 5.3) 2a. Proclamation of Prevented colonist from moving west over the Appalachian mts. - Soldiers sent to protect the colonist and prevent them from moving over the mts. - Indians benefit the most and peace on the frontier. - Seen as an act of TYRANNY by Patriots.

2b. Stamp Act (exam) No Taxation without representation. Self government. Had their own assemblies and taxes. Protest sometimes turned violent. Tar and feathered / buried alive. Repealed (got rid) the tax due to protests.

2c. Quartering Act House soldiers and provide bedding, candles, and beverages. There to protect the colonist from foreign invasion. Patriots thought the soldiers did nothing and another way to check and tax colonist.

2d. Patriot / Loyalist (exam) Patriot = Also called Whigs, believed they had the right to self govern and willing to fight Britain for the right. - Sons and Daughters of Liberty. Loyalist (Tories) = Loyal to the King and horrified at the thought of taking up arms against the best military in the world. - Saw the Patriots as Rebels.

3. Townshend Acts (sect. 5.4) Tax glass, paper, paint, lead, tea. To pay for soldiers in the colonies. Boycott the goods and business hurt so bad that it did not pay for the soldiers and business was worse. Repeal the tax and keep a small tax on Tea. Tea Act next.

4. Boston Massacre (sect. 5.5) (exam) March 5, Mob grows, hurling insults, ice, rocks. 2 soldiers pushed down, one hit. Soldiers fire into the crowd and 5 lay dead, including Crispus Attucks (AA Sailor). John Adams defends the soldiers, deserve a fair trial. Paul Revere and Sam Adams (cousin to John) make the incident seem as though the British murdered innocent colonist. Get more support for the cause.

5. Tea Act and Tea Party (sect. 5.6) (exam) Tea Act. Small tax on tea, cheaper than ever before, but they only use one company and cut out the middle merchant. Still a tax (principle). Dec. 16, After ships arrive and the Governor orders the tax paid and tea unloaded. Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians threw all the tea over board (only tea) British will pass the Intolerable Acts.

6. Intolerable Acts (sect. 5.7) (exam) 1. Closed the port of Boston until tea is paid for. 2. No more town meetings. 3. New strict Quartering Act, enforced, and more soldiers sent to Boston. 4. British Officials charged with murder tried in Britian. At the 1 st Continental Congress. 1. Saw themselves as citizens of individual colonies. Not Americans yet. 2. Wanted to find a way to have peace with Britain.

7. Lexington and Concord (sect. 5.8) (exam) April 1775, British leave Boston to find weapons being stored in Concord. Paul Revere’s famous ride. Militia meet British on the way at Lexington. No one knows who fired 1 st (shot heard round the world). 8 colonist dead. No weapons found and British were attacked going back to Boston. 72 dead. Start of the Revolution. Colonists willing to fight for right to self-govern.
