The Colonists vs. King George III Declaring Independence

Vocabulary Words grievance - another word for a complaint oppressed - subject to harsh treatment parliament - the law making body in Great Britain tax - a fee charged by the government on a product unalienable rights - certain rights the government should protect: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

The colonists frustrations... The colonists felt oppressed by King George III. KG3 used the colonies as a source of income. This is called mercantilism. KG3 & Parliament did not allow the colonists to have a political voice. KG3 taxed the colonists. “Taxation without representation”

Colonial Grievances 1. Taxation without representation. 2. King George III has absolute power over the colonies. 3. The colonists were not allowed to have a political voice or speak out against King George III. 4. Colonists were forced to “house” troops because of the Quartering Act.

Colonial Grievances 5. King George III allowed the colonists homes to be searched without a warrant. 6. King George III did not allow the colonists to have a trial by a jury of peers.

Declaring Independence July 1, 1776 1st Continental Congress met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Members of the Continental Congress revised the rough draft that was written by Thomas Jefferson. (This took a few days)

Declaring Independence July 4, 1776 The Continental Congress officially adopted “The Declaration of Independence.” It would be August 2, 1776 until it was signed.
