Causes of the American Revolution

What events & actions caused the colonists to rebel against Britain? Albany Plan of Union -1 st attempt to unite the colonist under on government -Led by Benjamin Franklin French and Indian War -War between the British and the French -Policy of Salutary Neglect began to end -British wanted colonists to help pay for war and raised taxes Proclamation of Closed the frontier -Colonists couldn’t go west (made the colonists feel like Britain was trying to control them)

What events & actions caused the colonists to rebel against Britain? Writs of Assistance -Colonists were being searched without any reasonable cause Quartering Act -Colonists were forced to allow British troops to stay in their private homes Stamp Act -Colonists had to purchase special stamps for all paper and legal documents

What events & actions caused the colonists to rebel against Britain? Navigation Act -Restricted trade between colonists & Britain -Act of mercantilism, where colonists were used only for benefit of their owner -Could only ship items on British ships -Goods must pass through British ports -Crews must be ¾ English

How did the colonists react to treatment they received from the British? “No taxation without representation” -Citizens began to protest taxes if Parliament continued to ignore the colonists Committee of Correspondence -Passed news from colony to colony about how England was violating the colonists’ rights First Continental Congress -Met in Philadelphia, Hoped to get the British government to respect colonist’s rights -Would meet in a year if situation didn’t improve

How did the colonists react to treatment they received from the British? Second Continental Congress -Situation didn’t improve -Delegates met to discuss independence -Thomas Paine’s Common Sense sealed the deal -Said it was logical to declare independence -July 4, 1776 the colonists declared independence
