Social Studies Content Objective: SWBAT understand key battles of the American Revolution. Language Objective: SWBAT give, listen to and analyze presentations about 2 Revolutionary War battles. Do Now: The American colonies wanted to be free. Great Britain wanted America to remain as a colony. War was coming for sure. Against this backdrop, does it matter who fired the first shot? Why or why not?

Vocabulary The Shot Heard Round the World: The opening shot of the American Revolution. No one knows who fired it. Patriot: An American colonist who wanted independence from Great Britain. Loyalist: An American colonist who remained loyal to Great Britain, and who didn’t wanted independence.

Explanation This PPT is actually what I am using this week. We are learning about 5 battles in the American Revolution: Saratoga, Yorktown, Lexington, Bunker Hill and Trenton. For each battle, a student group has prepared a presentation. Additionally, we will be watching a short video clip for each incident, and taking down key ideas using a web. (Students have graphic organizers that they are filling out.) I also have images in here that I am using to teach vocabulary. Students use the words to guess the definitions, and then they copy down the real ones. I teach special ed, so definitions are simplified.
