Freneau writes the poem to encourage western migration by describing it as a place where “Nature’s wildest genius reigns” and where “mighty states” shall “successive grow.” He conveys the idea that in these new states mistakes made by civilians in the past can be corrected. OR His purpose points out the evil of slavery as practiced in the east. Lines refer to the regions that “raise our blush,” “Where still the African complains,/ And mourns his yet unbroken chains.”

12. Her first poem reflects the love of the abstract ideal of freedom, echoing the sentiments of many of the colonist around her. In the first stanza she writes, “Freedom’s charms unfold/…She shines supreme, while hated faction dies,” The second stanza and other lines in the poem refer to the need to abolish the tyranny of slavery, but she is circumspect in expressing that sentiment. Wheatley’s second poem echoes the sentiment commonly heard to justify the slave trade, which is that the Africans brought to America are better off than those left in the “pagan” land because their souls have been saved by the “good” Christians who rescued them.

With 3 other students (groups of 4) look through your 26 grievances and make sure they are clear. You will need to make sure to understand these. Ask a neighbor or me to help you if you do not. Rewrite each grievance in your own words so it makes sense to you!

 The last unit contained letters from Abigail Adams and her husband John Adams and a biography of her.  With a neighbor please discuss what you remember from that article. If you still have it, please get it out and review to help you remember.  Class Discussion

 Silently read through Abigail Adams’ “Last Act of Defiance.” You do not need to do anything but read through the content at this point.

1. Read the first two paragraphs on page 57. Underline references to dates and events that orient the reader and provide historical context. 2. Highlight the sentence that shows the main idea in each paragraph (1,2). Place an “M” next to it. 3. In the margin summarize the situation that concerns Adams. 4. Look at paragraph two, in the margin, define how laws differed between single women and married women. Highlight each sentence that supports your answer. Draw arrow to it.
