Things which show that the Archbishop had upset the King. Edward Grim said that the knights called Becket a “traitor to the king / queen”. Ralph of Diceto said that the knights “demanded in the name of King Henry II / Queen Eleanor”..

This made the situation worse because Henry and Becket had worked well together to increase the power of the King over the wicked barons / dragons. Becket was proving / disproving that he had the power to use the Church courts. This infuriated Henry and Becket ran away to France / Spain, which made Henry even angrier / happier!

This made the situation worse because Henry hoped that Becket would use his new position to reduce / increase the power of the Church courts. Becket did not believe that the King had the power to make him Bishop / Archbishop and he wanted to protect Church privileges, like the courts, from the King / Pope. Picture 5: Henry passed a new law that said all serious Church court cases had to be tried again in the King’s courts.. This made Becket very angry because he believed that he was the only person who should have the power to do this. Henry was proving / disproving that he had the power to control the Church courts. Picture 6: Henry ordered the Archbishop of York / Canterbury to crown his son. This infuriated Becket, because it should have been done by the Archbishop of Canterbury / York. This is why Becket expelled some Bishops from the Church.
