Presentation transcript:

TEHERAN, Iran — A radical cleric called Saturday for the creation of a "Greater Iran" that would rule over the entire Middle East and Central Asia, in an event that he said would herald the coming of Islam's expected messiah. Ayatollah Mohammad Bagher Kharrazi said the creation of what he termed an Islamic United States is a central aim of the political party he leads - called Hizbullah, or Party of God. He added that he hoped to make his vision a reality if the party won the next presidential election. Kharrazi's comments revealed the thinking of a growing number of hard-liners in Iran, many of whom have become more radical during the postelection political crisis and the international standoff over the country's nuclear program. Kharrazi, however, is not highly influential in Iran's clerical hierarchy and his views do not represent those of the current government.

He said he envisioned a Greater Iran that would stretch from Afghanistan to Israel, bringing about the destruction of the Jewish state. He also said its formation would be a prelude to the reappearance of the Mahdi, a revered ninth-century saint known as the Hidden Imam, whom Muslims believe will reappear before judgment day to end tyranny and promote justice in the world. "The Islamic United States will be an introduction to the formation of the global village of the oppressed and that will be a prelude to the single global rule of the Mahdi," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Israel should be integrated into an Islamic Caliphate, and Hamas and Hizbullah should be respected as legitimate political movements, according to Israeli- Arab MK Masoud Ganaim in an interview with the weekly paper Kul al-Arab, which is published in Israel. The interview was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). Ganaim explicitly said that he is opposed to Jewish statehood, stating that his Ra'am Ta'al party is “against the Zionist movement and its racist ideas.” If Israel is absorbed into an Islamic Caliphate, he said, Jews will be allowed to remain in the region.

Ganaim is a member of the southern branch of the Islamic Movement, a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Regarding Jerusalem, which Ganaim referred to as “occupied,” the MK said that Arabs must be prepared to fight. “Jerusalem and Al-Aksa [Mosque] are both in danger,” he declared. He backed extremist Muslim leaders in saying that Israel is threatening the Al-Aksa Mosque and plans to rebuild the Temple. When asked if the struggle for Al-Aksa should be peaceful, the MK said Muslims “must not relinquish any means.” Ganaim expressed support for Hamas and Hizbullah, which both strive to destroy Israel. “The Iran-Syria- Hizbullah axis represents the policy of resistance and non-capitulation, so naturally I am with this axis,” he said when asked which side he would support in a battle between Iran and a handful of Arab nations.

Within the wall of Jerusalem is still more holy... The Temple Mount is still more holy... Within the Rampart is still more holy... The Court of the Women is still more holy... The Court of the Israelites is still more holy... The Court of the Priests is still more holy... Between the Porch and the Altar is still more holy... The Sanctuary is still more holy... I will dwell among them Another Talmudic tradition states that Elijah the Prophet will present himself before a duly-ordained Sanhedrin when he announces the coming of the Messiah. “The Sanhedrin calls upon all groups who work in the area of Temple and Temple Mount-related research and activity, to begin to prepare detailed architectural plans for the construction of the Holy Temple, towards the goal of its establishment in its proper place. The Sanhedrin will establish a forum of architects and engineers whose goal will be to implement this decision, so that detailed working plans are effectively brought to an operational stage.”

“The Sanhedrin calls upon the Jewish people to contribute towards the acquisition of materials for the purpose of rebuilding the Holy Temple; the gathering and preparation of prefabricated, disassembled portions of this building to be stored and ready for rapid assembly, in the manner of King David.” Prof. Hillel Weiss R. Tuesday, June Tammuz,5770 The "Three Weeks" of gradually-increasing mourning over the destruction of the Holy Temples and Israel's exile begins today (Tuesday) with the fast of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz. The Three Weeks end on the 9th of Av - Tisha B'Av – (July 19, 5770) the date on which both the First and Second Temples were destroyed, roughly 2,500 and 2,000 years ago respectively. Mourning customs such as no weddings, parties, or haircuts continue until the morning after Tisha B'Av; there are slight differences between Ashkenazi and Sephardic customs. ~620 AD 1: Exalted is He who carried His worshiper (Prophet Muhammad) to travel in the night from the Sacred Temple (Mosque) to the Furthest Temple (Mosque) which We have blessed around it so that We might show him some of Our signs. He is the Hearer, the Seer. Koran – Surah 17 The Night Journey - Al-'Isra‘ Hadith – Sahih Muslim – book 1, #309 “came to the Temple”

7: So when the second of the warnings came to pass, (We permitted your enemies) to disfigure your faces, and to enter your Temple as they had entered it before, and to visit with destruction all that fell into their power. Koran – Surah 17: 7 The Night Journey - Al-'Isra‘ Yusufali translation

6: Then, when the promise for your second forewarning came to be fulfilled, We sent another army (the Romans) to disfigure your faces and to enter your Temple as the former had entered it before, and they utterly destroyed all that they laid their hands on. Koran – Surah 17: 6 The Night Journey - Al-'Isra‘ MidEastWeb translation

7: So, when the time for the second (of the judgments) came (We roused against you others of Our slaves) to ravage you, and to enter the Temple even as they entered it the first time, and to lay waste all that they conquered with an utter wasting. Koran – Surah 17: 7 The Night Journey - Al-'Isra‘ Pickthal translation

7: And when the second promise came (We sent them against you), to sadden your faces and to enter the Mosque as they entered it the first time, they utterly destroyed whatever they came across. Koran – Surah 17: 7 The Night Journey - Al-'Isra‘ Qaribullah translation

"Its identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to universal belief, on which 'David built there an altar unto the Lord...'” The official 1925 Supreme Moslem Council Guide Book to Al-Haram Al-Sharif

"The claim of the Jews to the right over [Jerusalem] is false, and we recognize nothing but an entirely Islamic Jerusalem under Islamic supervision..." Mufti Ikrama Sabri chief Moslem cleric of the Palestinian Authority 1997

"We remind, for the 1,000th time, that the entire Al-Aqsa mosque, including all of its area and alleys above the ground and under it, is exclusive and absolute Moslem property, and no one else has any rights to even one grain of earth in it." Raed Salah Islamic Movement chief 2006

"Israeli occupation authorities are trying to find a so-called Jewish historical connection" between Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, "but all these attempts will fail. The [Temple Mount] is 100 percent Muslim." "The world must be mobilized against all these Israeli attempts to change the symbols and signs of Jerusalem," he said. "There is nothing Jewish about the Al Aqsa Mosque. There was no so- called Jewish Temple. It's imaginary. Jerusalem is 100 percent Muslim." Ahmed Qurei chief negotiator, Palestinian Authority November 6, 2008

Continued Qurei: "The Arab world is called to interfere to stop the Israeli plans in Jerusalem, to stop the Israeli attempts to create a Jewish character to Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa mosque. Also to the Old City, which is the first step in the war to defend Jerusalem and Al Aqsa. "They are competing against time in order to create facts on ground surrounding the imaginary Temple," Qurei added. Ahmed Qurei chief negotiator, Palestinian Authority November 6, 2008

[Yoav] Frankel considers the scenario of a holy revelation given to an authentic prophet that the Temple be rebuilt on the current or an extended Temple Mount in peaceful proximity to the dome and other houses of prayer such as the Aksa Mosque and nearby Christian shrines. God's Holy Mountain Vision The Interfaith Encounter Association June 21, 2009

In contrast, Baruch Ben-Yosef, chairman of the Movement to Restore the Temple, made it clear that the Temple had to be built where the Dome of the Rock presently stands. "Anybody who says anything else simply does not know what he is talking about," he said. "A prophet does not have the power to change the law which explicitly states the location of the Temple." Ben-Yosef also rejected the idea that rebuilding of the Temple had to be done by a prophet. "All you need is a Sanhedrin," he said. God's Holy Mountain Vision The Interfaith Encounter Association June 21, 2009

"The mahdi [Muslim messiah] will decide whether or not to rebuild the Temple. If he decides that it should be rebuilt, I will go out to the Temple Mount and help carry the rocks." "As long as there is a Muslim alive, no Jewish Temple will be built on Al-Haram Al-Sharif [the Temple Mount]. The status quo must be maintained, otherwise there will be bloodshed." God's Holy Mountain Vision The Interfaith Encounter Association June 21, 2009

” “Israel’s demand for the Western Wall is not premised on the Kotel being a holy Jewish site in and of itself. The demand is premised on the Kotel being a remnant of our Temple. Anyone recognizing our right for the Western Wall must recognize the fact that the Kotel is part of a structure or several structures that Jews have no less attachment to than the Muslims. One who has no right for the structure has no right for any wall of that structure.” Efraim Halevy ynetnews.com 7/7/10

Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The Mahdi will be of my stock, and will have a broad forehead a prominent nose.
