Where is it? The monument is located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire, about 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury.

History It was built in the Neolithic period by stone age people and was built in 3 stages. Many people believe it was a sacrificial site, a burial ground or a place of worship. Stonehenge is Anglo-Saxon for hanging stones.

What it is now Stonehenge is now a tourist attraction and a World Heritage Site. People from all around the world come and visit it. Visitors are no longer allowed to touch the stones because of erosion.
