Edmund Barton Edmund Barton was the Prime Minister from the 1st January 1901 to 24th September 1903. Edmund was the second youngest of 11 children in his family. Australian Federation Australia had six self governing colonies. They were New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. These colonies were under British rule from the time the First Fleet landed in 1788. Many politicians and influenced Australians through the years had pushed for federation of the colonies, and self-government. Australian Federation was an agreement by the existing British colonies promising to work together under the Australian constitution as one nation. Australian Federation started January 1st 1901. They celebrated at Sydney’s Centennial Park.

Family Andrew’s parents names were Robert and Jane. His father was a miner. He was forced to leave his job when got pneumoconiosis. Andrew had 5 brothers and 1 sister.
