VANCOUVER AND ITS MUNICIPALITIES Vancouver is located in the south west corner of British Columbia, which is one of Canada’s provinces. The city is found on the mainland of North America and it is on the west side of Canada. The area of Greater Vancouver is made up of 21 municipalities that occupy 2,930 square kilometres on and around the Fraser River delta. The City of Vancouver is one of these municipalities and covers 114 square kilometers.Vancouver is located in the south west corner of British Columbia, which is one of Canada’s provinces. The city is found on the mainland of North America and it is on the west side of Canada. The area of Greater Vancouver is made up of 21 municipalities that occupy 2,930 square kilometres on and around the Fraser River delta. The City of Vancouver is one of these municipalities and covers 114 square kilometers.

POPULATION Vancouver’s population is made up of a variety of nationalities and cultures and is very unique. This attracts many visitors and many companies invest in Vancouver, which helps the economy. The city has a population of approximately 2 million people and it is the third biggest city in British Columbia. It is also the third largest city in Canada.

LANGUAGES AND CULTURE The two official languages that the people speak in Vancouver are English and French as these are the official languages of Canada. Because the City is multicultural, many people speak other languages and many follow the traditions of their mother countries. They also cook the food from their mother countries. After English and Chinese, the most common mother tongue languages spoken are Punjabi, German, Italian, French, Filipino and Spanish. More than half of Vancouver's school-age children have been raised speaking a language other than English. The native Indian people are a small percentage of the population but they gave a lot of history and culture to Vancouver with totem poles in the parks and art.

CLIMATE Vancouver has a mild climate as it is warmed by the Pacific Ocean and it is protected by a range of mountains (the Coast Mountains). Vancouver temperatures range from low to middle 20's Celsius in summer to a mild middle 0º to 5º Celsius in the winter. The climate is always friendly. The winters are wet since it rains very much, but it rarely snows, except on local ski hills. 10 KEY FACTS ABOUT VANCOUVER 40% of people living in Vancouver were born outside of Canada. Vancouver has the highest number of Asian people in North America. The people of Vancouver are environmentally friendly and live “green” in their life. Hockey is the main sport of Vancouver. Many movies are filmed in Vancouver. The people of Vancouver love the outdoors – they like hiking, biking, skiing and snowboarding during the year. It always rains in Vancouver. You can see the sea and also see the mountains at the same time in Vancouver. Vancouver is one of the best cities to live in the world. Vancouver is located in an area with lots of earthquakes.

ATTRACTIONS - SIGHTS There are many attractions and sights to see in Vancouver. They are: – Down town Vancouver. – Whistler – a ski resort that is 2 hours north of Vancouver. – Minter Gardens – beautiful gardens in Chilliwack (2 hours away). – Metrotown Mall - in Burnaby, suburb of Vancouver. – Telus – World of Science – exhibition for technology. – Vancouver Lookout – to see mountains, harbor, down town Vancouver – Stanley Park – well known park and tourist sight and has animals, zoo, aquarium. Also there are totem poles from the Indians. – Granville Street – main street in down town Vancouver. – Burnaby Village Museum – old western village museum for tourists. – Vancouver Art Gallery – has paintings, sculptures, photography. – Capilano suspension bridge – in North Vancouver. – Famous Steam clock in Gastown.
