What is a Spy? A spy is someone who works secretly for one government or military to obtain information about troop movement, supplies, fortification, and political maneuvers. Spies worked for both America and England. Spies still work for countries today.

Invisible ink Many types of invisible ink were used. There were two main types of invisible ink: one that needs heat to be seen, and the other needs various chemicals to be seen. It was usually put on a fake letter to look innocent if they were searched.

Codes A code usually involves letters or numbers that mean words. To decode the message the recipient would need a key or code book. Ciphers were another type of code. They involve codes of numbers that tell a key word that decodes the message.

Blind Drop A blind drop is when a message is left at an undisclosed area for the receiver. The message is usually hidden in items such as fake bullets, the stem of a quill, or a button. The message was eaten if the person holding it was captured.

Disguises People disguised as crazy or drunk people to avoid being captured when they were snooping around. They also might have been disguised in other ways that we do not know of.

Nathan Hale Nathan Hale, was a great American spy. He originally was a teacher, but then he became a part of the Continental Army. He went to Britain and got information about troop movement. When he was about to be hung, he said “ I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Benedict Arnold Benedict Arnold was a traitor. Though that was not always true. He was a great leader at many battles. Unfortunately, he had too many bills and Britain offered him money.

A Day as a Patriotic Spy If you were a spy, you’d probably wake up at about 3:00 a.m., arm yourself, then immediately walk outside and head towards the enemy base. Then you’d just sneak around all day trying to catch something important. Some days you’d get good information then hurry back to tell the Patriotic commander, then sneak back to find out more. At the end of the day you would come back to camp and go to sleep.

Spies Then Compared to Spies Now Spies are very different today. They need to know a lot more because security is a lot tighter. They also need more weapons because there are more defense mechanisms around the places that they need to get into. However, we also get the internet to snoop around with out being detected.

Things to think about How would you feel if you were a spy? What would you have said as your last words if you were Nathan Hale? Which job is easier: a spy then or a spy now?
