 Sericulture is a labour intensive, agro based rural industry, providing employment not only to agricultural poor but also to landless labourers.  In Karnataka 1.25 lakhs of Sericulturists have involved in cultivating 62,692 hect of Mulberry, producing about 50% of the total silk production of the Country.  Sericulture is a low investment, short gestation period and profitable crop, it starts giving yield after 6 months of plantation and continue to yield for years. 2

 Ramanagara District, popularly known as “SILK CITY” having 23,500 Sericulturists cultivating in 11,270 hectare of Mulberry, producing 1/6 of the total production of silk of our Karnataka State.(Total production of the state is 48,400 metric tonne).  Getting 5 crops in a year at an interval of 70 days per crop, a farmer gets 1,24,800 lakhs of profit per acre of land.  There is good marketing facilities for the crop produced. Department of sericulture provides QUALITY and PRODUCTIVITYbased incentive price. Of Rs.10/-per kg. for Crossbreed cocoon and Rs.40/-per kg. for bivoltine hybrid cocoons respectively. 3

Beneficiary profit for one acre Mulberry plantation under MGNREGA  Production of Cocoons 650 kgs. which is the raw material for the Fabric  Average rate of Rs.320/- per kg. for 650 kgs Cocoon-Rs/208000/-  Expenditure 40% = Cost of Disinfectants for 10 Days, CHAWKI WORMS + Labour Cost + RENT for chandrikas+Transportation of Cocoons+1% market fee.  Total Income - Rs  Total Expenditure- Rs  Net Profit- Rs.1,24,800 /annum 17

 Farmer gets Profit Rs.1,24,800 /annum  Employment generation = 4x365 days= 1460 mandays / annum / acre  Compared to Agriculture and Horticulture, Sericulture ensures higher income per unit area.  An average of 1,000 to 1,500 Sericulturists will be covered in one year. 18

OUT COME OF THE CONVERGENCE PROGRAMME  Active participation of Farmer in MGNREGA  Creation of 1460 Man days throughout the year and continue for 15 years.  Gets an additional income of Rs1,24,800- per Acre/annum.  Creates livelihood generating durable assets for years  Combats Poverty 19
