Functional Text I can interpret details in functional text to follow directions, solve problems, follow procedures, and answer questions.

Essential Questions What is functional text? How do we use details from functional text for a specific purpose? How do we locate specific information in functional text?

What is Functional Text? Functional text is used for everyday information. It helps you function in your day- to-day life. It’s text that explains or gives information. For example, if I wanted to bake a cheesecake, I would use a recipe. If I needed to put a new toy together, I would use the instruction manual. If I wanted to know what my teacher had planned today in class, I would read the schedule.

What you need to know! All functional text has a purpose. There are many different types of functional text. Different types of functional text have different forms.

Slates out! On your slates I want you to think back and brainstorm types of functional text. You will have one minute on your own, and then an additional 30 seconds to try to get the largest list for your group. Good luck!!!

Let’s Check it out! Did you have these types of functional text? Menus Recipes Directions to a location Schedule of events How-to-manuals Pamphlets Directions on a test Did you have any other examples of functional text?

Tricks to reading functional text!!! When answering questions on functional text, first read the question so you know what to look for. Once you have key words you can go to the functional text to locate them to answer the questions. Let’s practice! Hope you kept those slates out!

Here we go!!! Ingredients 2 1/4cups all purpose flour 1 1/3 cups sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 large eggs Easy Cupcake Recipe Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cupcake pans with paper liners. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add shortening, milk, and vanilla. Beat for 1 minute on medium speed. Scrape side of bowl with a spatula. Add eggs to the mixture. Beat for 1 minute on medium speed. Scrape bowl again. Beat on high speed for 1 minute 30 seconds until well mixed. Spoon cupcake batter into paper liners until 1/2 to 2/3 full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes in pans then remove and place on wire racks to cool completely. Once cupcakes are completely cooled, frost with your favorite frosting recipe or decorate as you desire. How many cups of milk do you need? 1 cup milk How long do the cupcakes cool in the pans? 5 minutes

More Practice! Cienega Boy’s Basketball Schedule How many games did they win so far in January and February? 12 How many points did they beat Flowing Wells by on 1/13/09? 34!!!

It’s your turn You will see a set of directions. On your slates write 3 questions one could answer based on the functional text! Write your questions and turn your slate over when you are done! We will share in three minutes:)

Three ?s time!!! Try to create challenging questions!

Closure On your slates, write two things that you think are the most important to things to remember when reading different forms of functional text!

Independent practice On a sheet of notebook paper create five questions about the functional text before. After you have five, switch papers, and answer your friend’s questions. Hand your paper’s in the basket when done!!!
