What is First Aid? First Aid is quick help to ease an injured person before they Can get to medical assistance.

What is Medical aid? Medical aid is treatment by a doctor, registered nurse or ambulance officer.

What do I do first? Get help!!! Tell a leader, a teacher, another adult send another cub but stay with the patient

What are the big three? AIRWAY (LOOK LISTEN FEEL) BLEEDING CONTROL

Conscious chocking Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Ensure that the victim can’t speak or cough Perform abdominal thrust until the obstruction is cleared Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1 2 3

Severe Bleeding (R.E.D.) Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Call 911 and put on protective gloves Remember R.E.D = Rest, Elevation, and Direct pressure (Most Important) Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1 3 2

Unconscious Victim Ask the victim a question to find out if they are conscious do not shake them! Send someone to call for 911 and put on protective gloves Perform your ABC check – if they are not breathing do CPR Hold the victims head an monitor the airway until medical aid arrives

How to treat a burn Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… 3 Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Determine what kind of burn it is and call 911 if necessary Run the effected area under cool water and wait for medical aid to arrive Keep the patient calm and out of shock Never remove burnt clothing, never break or pop blisters, never put on creams, lotions or grease Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1

What kind of burn is this? For burns over more than one arm or the entire abdomen or to the face, hands, feet or genitals – call 911

How to stop a nose bleed Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Have the patient lean slightly forward Have them pinch their nose just below the bridge and keep an even pressure Once the bleeding has stopped make sure the patient doesn’t do anything to start the bleeding again; like blowing their nose or picking it Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1

What to do if your clothes are on fire.. STOP, DROP, ROLL If it is someone else burning tell them to do that too! If they aren’t listening to you grab a blanket and try to smother the flame and then treat them for any burns they have.

Frostbite – what it looks like

Frostbite – how to treat it Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Warm the area slowly – under the arm pits (theirs not yours) *DO NOT * rub the area as it causes more damage, or hold it near a fire, or immerse in hot water – warm it slowly using body heat! 2 Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1 3

Treating and insect bite or sting Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Try to determine what caused the bite Ask the patient if they are allergic to stings if not remove the stinger Apply ice to the swelling for 20 minutes then remove – but not directly on the skin Call 911 if necessary Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1

In the case of a systemic reaction, the person may break out in hives In the case of a systemic reaction, the person may break out in hives. Other symptoms include wheezing; shortness of breath; rapid heartbeat; faintness; and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. If a person has these symptoms, it's important to get help immediately. Scrape the sting area with a sterile needle to remove the stinger – tweezers will add venom to the sting site…

Hypothermia Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP Confusion and trouble solving problems, plus mild shivering. Stumbling and stronger shivering, pale skin, having trouble speaking and an “I-don’t-care” attitude. Inability to walk and horrible shivers. Slow heartbeat and breathing. Skin turns blue. Muscles grow rigid. Then, death Hi I’m a Cub. I’ve been trained In first aid… CAN I HELP YOU? 1 Identify yourself and ask if you can assist Get the patient to a warm place Change wet clothing for dry stuff Give them warm sweet liquid and high energy food Wrap them in a blanket

Hypothermia The best medicine is prevention. Wear clothes designed to keep you warm in the cold. Wear lots of thin layers of clothes instead of one heavy coat. If you get warm and sweaty, take off a layer to let the sweat dry. If you start feeling cold again, add layers of clothing. Drink and eat a lot, so your body has plenty of “fuel” to generate heat. In a group, watch out for hypothermia’s symptoms in others. They may not realize they are becoming hypothermic.

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: Treatment: Weakness / dizziness Headache / nausea  Cold / moist skin  Paleness  Dry tongue / thirst  Vomiting  Loss of appetite  Excessive sweating Rapid / weak heartbeat Fast / shallow breathing Muscle fatigue Cramps  Treatment: Remove the person to a shady place  Loosen tight-fitting clothing   Remove extra clothes    Cool with a wet towel or sponge  give water in small sips (no coffee or alcohol) seek medical aid if patient doesn’t get better in 30 mins
