How did Sam Houston use geography to his advantage in the Runaway Scrape? Houston burned fields, houses, and towns behind his settlers and troops which resulted in Mexican troops running low on supplies. Houston used the terrain that he knew well to lead settlers to safer areas in Texas where he could regroup. Houston ordered Vince’s Bridge to be burned down so that the Mexican army could not retreat. Houston used his military training from the U.S. Army to lead his troops to a nearby plantation so that they could spend time in combat training.

What was the significance of the Battle of Gonzales? It was the first military engagement of the TX Revolution. After the vote about returning the cannon to Mexican forces, Texians citizens opened fire on the Mexican soldiers. It was the first alignment of Mexican and Comanche forces against citizens of Gonzales. Mexican Lt. Francisco Castaneda moved his forces after receiving information that the Texian forces were much larger than anticipated.

What was the significance of the Convention of 1836? The delegates were debating the issue of statehood and annexation. The delegates of the convention adopted a gov’t that would be in place until the following election year, wrote the Declaration of Independence, and drafted the Republic’s Constitution. The convention was meant to establish a permanent gov’t but ran out of time. Sam Houston had to convince the delegates to stay and work on the gov’t rather than abandoning the task to aid in the conflict.
