Chapter 13, Section 3

Discuss the procedures for removing these types of stain from tile floors Blood stains Burn marks Candy or chewing gum Heel marks Ink stains Nail polish Urine

Water should not be used to clean hardwood floors.

Wear Heavy Latex Utility Gloves and Protective Goggles When Resealing a Concrete Floor.

Safety First: Using a Buffer Machine Place caution signs in the work area. Check the electrical cords for tangles or damage. Unplug the machine when switching brushes or pads. Practice using the machine until you are comfortable keeping control over it.

Discuss the procedures for removing these types of stains from carpets or upholstery. Blood Stains If a blood stain is fresh, blot with a paper towel, then spray the spot with a solution of ammonia and cold water. Blot with paper towel to remove extra wetness. Apply a small amount of approved detergent to the spot. Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the carpet. If it is working, keep adding detergent and blotting until the stain is gone. Rinse with tap water in spray bottle and dry again with a paper towel. Spray lightly with water again and apply a pad of paper towels and a weight to hold the paper towel down on the spot. Allow the spot to dry. If there is still a stain on the carpet, you may need to use a commercial blood remover or special shampoo. Throw the paper towels in a sealable plastic container. Put the container in a separate trash can for special handling. Wipe the area dry with paper towels. Wash hands immediately after removing gloves.

Burn Marks Use small, sharp scissors to clip away charred fibers from carpet surfaces with high piles. Mix carpet cleaner and water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the cleaner to the burn mark with a sponge. Place a thick, folded cleaning cloth over the burn mark and press firmly to remove the water or use a wet vacuum to remove large amounts of water.

Candy or chewing gum Apply ice to the candy or gum that is tuck to the carpet or furniture. Hold the ice on the candy or gum until it is brittle enough to crumble off. Apply an approved degreaser to the stain. Rinse the spot with a wet cloth or sponge and clot excess water with a sponge or dry cloth.

Nail Polish Blot as much of the polish as possible using a sponge or dry cloth. Public space cleaners must inform their supervisor about the stain as the type of carpet or upholstery will determine the correct way to remove it.

UrineUse absorbent paper towels to blot up any fresh urine. Once it is blotted up, contact a supervisor who can check the fabric type and determine what stain removal method should be used. Any cloths, paper towels, sponges, gloves or other items used to clean urine must be placed in a sealable plastic container and disposed of in a special trash can.

Stripping Old Wax from a Tile Floor 1.Put on heavy, latex gloves and protective goggles. 2.Mix water and an approved ammonia-based floor stripper. 3.Apply a heavy coat of the solution to the floor. 4.Let stand for 10 minutes. 5.Hand-scrub the edges with a brush. 6.Scrape loose wax from corners with a putty knife. 7.Pick up residue with a hand cloth.
