 George Kennan- U.S. diplomat from embassy in Moscow  The Long Telegram  “ Russian sense of insecurity”  Outlined the idea of ‘containment’- stopping the spread of communism

 (1946)U.S. occupied Southern Iran during the war  Soviets occupied Northern Iran  Post war- U.S. pulled out, Stalin remained in hopes to gain control of oil supply  U.S. sent in USS Missouri along with a strong message to get out of the middle East  Stalin eventually gave in

 Truman went before Congress to ask for $400 million to fight Communist aggression in Greece and Turkey  The goal  Aid anyone who was fighting against communist rule

 Gave aid to nations to rebuild their economies  Helped to prevent poor countries from falling to communism  Truman felt his doctrine and Marshall Plan were essential to stopping the spread of communism

 By 1948 Germany would be officially split as a nation  West Germany had free elections with democratic government  East Germany would be completely communist  Stalin cut off West Germany and created a blockade  No food, no shipping in, no electricity, etc.

 U.S. and GB flew planes over Berlin for over a year and a half (‘48-’49) bring supplies  2 million tons of supplies  Showed the Allied hard stance against Communist rule  May of ‘49- Stalin finally lifts the blockade

 North American Treaty Organization  Military cooperation from nations involved that would work together to stop spread of communism  US, Can, GB, Fr, Ity, Belg, Denm, Port, Nethl, Nor, Lux, Ice  In response the Soviets created the Warsaw Pact- organization of SU and satellite nations
