INdirect Object Pronouns Ay, yay, yay, it’s still not over!

What is it? Used with Verbs like gustar –A Paco Le agrada correr. It tells us WHO is receiving something (the direct object). –He gives the book to Maria. DO= book Who’s getting the book?...Maria. –He gives Maria the book. DO= book Who’s getting the book?...Maria.

How can we find it? Ask yourself to whom?, for whom? the direct object (what?) is going. –He gives the book to Maria. (He gives Maria the book.) He gives the book to whom?...Maria. –He buys the flowers for his girlfriend. (He buys his girlfriend the flowers.) He buys the flowers for whom?...his girlfriend. –Te abro la puerta. (favor) I open the door for you.

Cont. Sometimes, you won’t see the direct object BUT it is assumed –She writes me. DO= a letter (assumed) She writes to whom?...me. –He told them. DO= it (assumed) He told it to whom?...them.

What are the pronouns? Me (me) Te (you) Le (him, her, you- formal) Nos (us) Les (them, you all)

Where do they go? SAME AS DOPs One verb sentence –BEFORE the conjugated verb Yo le digo la verdad. Two consecutive verbs –Before the conjugated verb Yo le voy a decir la verdad. Le estoy diciendo la verdad. –Attached to the infinitive or gerund Yo voy a decirle la verdad. Estoy diciéndole la verdad.

Le(s) Remember, le(s) have different meanings –Le= to him, to her, to you (formal) –Les= to them, to you all How do you know which meaning? –ADD a prepositional phrase (A + person) (Think of Verbs like gustar- a + person + IOP) Yo le doy el regalo a mi madre. I give my mom the gift. OR I give the gift to my mom.

IMPORTANT Remember, the IOP is a MUST, the prep phrase is for clarification or emphasis –E–E–E–El estudiante le dio la tarea a la profesora. –¿–¿–¿–¿Dónde está la tarea? - ¡Ya te di la tarea a ti!

Identify the DO and the IO 1.He give her a ring (un anillo). 2.She sing them a song (una canción). 3.He reads the book to the children. 4.I give the dog a bone. 5.We buy the flowers for you.

Translate the phrases. 6. They buy you… 7. We read to them… 8. I give him… 9. We tell her… 10.She writes us… 11. You bring to him…

Translate the sentences. 12. She writes you a letter. 13. We give the gift to my best friend. 14. He sends them a package (paquete). 15. They do him a favor (un favor). 16. I am going to tell you (fam.) a secret. 17. He can lend (prestar) you (form.) a pen.
