INTRODUCING

LEED ® Canada for Homes City Month, Day, Year

CaGBC and LEED CaGBC develops and adapts LEED programs LEED programs are –Adapted from USGBC programs –Modified for Canadian climates, practices, & regulations Developed in an open & inclusive process –Stakeholders & experts shaped the Canadian program with input from an almost coast to coast case study

What is a “green” home? Energy and resource efficient Healthy and safe Durable Environmentally responsible Supports a sustainable community 87% of homebuyers are more satisfied with a new green home than with a previous non-green home.* *2008 study by McGraw-Hill construction

What is a LEED home? Certified through an internationally accepted third-party program recognizing design and construction improvements Rated: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum Achieve “credits” in eight categories Verified by the only 3 rd party national green residential standard

LEED Canada for Homes Only 3 forms required to submit to the CaGBC! –Expanded checklist –Durability evaluation form –Accountability form Registration for single family homes is only $215 Program is Provider based Rigor is maintained via the Rater (a person) and the Provider(an organization) model

LEED Canada for Homes Home Builders and project teams are encouraged to internalize the knowledge The program was designed to work for small single family builders up to larger production builders Both prescriptive and performance energy options are available Has a home size adjustor

Why BUY a LEED home? Consumer/owner benefits include: –Cost savings (energy, water) –Healthier indoor environment –Environmental responsibility –Better quality, durability and reliability –Confidence (tested, verified, and certified) –Higher resale value In 2009, almost a third of homebuilders will be “heavily” involved in green construction.* *2008 study by McGraw-Hill construction

Why BUILD LEED homes? Builder benefits include: –Recognition (media, awards, etc.) –Market differentiation (leadership) –Customer satisfaction (word of mouth) –Personal satisfaction (making a difference) –Contribution (to green building knowledge) –Profitability (making money) In 2009, two thirds of homebuilders will have a “moderate or greater” involvement in green homebuilding.* *2008 study by McGraw-Hill construction

What are the roles: Builder/project team: Designs and builds home Rater: Verifies performance and meeting standards Provider: Hires & trains Raters, educates, assist in the process, does quality control Canada Green Building Council : Develops and adapts the Rating System, grants certification to homes, selects Providers and develops curriculum.

LEED Canada for Homes Facts 30+ (USGBC) certified homes in Canada 300+ more registered with CaGBC Approx. 50 builders and 500 units in the Case Study Program Seven LEED Canada for Homes Providers Canadian program launched March 3rd

Rating System LEED Canada for Homes Certification Levels Number of LEED Canada for Homes Points Required Certified45—59 Silver60—74 Gold75—89 Platinum90—136 Total available points136 LEED Homes are certified by earning points, drawn from several categories designed to rate different areas of the project from design to water efficiency to indoor environmental quality The rating system

Credit categories Innovation & Design (ID) NEW Location & Linkages (LL) Sustainable Sites (SS) Water Efficiency (WE) Energy & Atmosphere (EA) Materials & Resources (MR) Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ) NEW Awareness & Education (AE)

Category: ID Innovation & Design Purpose: Planning and design Strategies recognized: –Integrated design process –Addressing durability –Regionally appropriate design

Category: LL (New) Location & Linkages Purpose: Choosing better sites Strategies recognized: –Land conservation –Improved urban design and development –Community development –Efficient and cost-effective infrastructure –Improved marketability of homes

Category: SS Sustainable Sites Purpose: Encourage better development of the lot Strategies recognized: –Minimally disrupted soils, flora, hydrology and microclimate –Reduced water demand Cost savings Less load on infrastructure –Smaller physical footprint

Category: WE Water Efficiency Purpose: Efficient use of water (indoors and out) Strategies recognized: –Low flow fixtures –Drip irrgation –Rainwater and graywater use –Reduced load on infrastructure; demand for new infrastructure –Reduced impact on local and regional watersheds

Category: EA Energy & Atmosphere Purpose: Reducing energy consumption and refrigerant leakage Strategies recognized: –Energy-efficiency in design and construction –Opportunity for on site renewable –Right sizing equipment –Mitigation of GHGs –Both prescriptive and modeling paths exist.

Category: MR Materials & Resources Purpose: Reward better material choices and waste reduction Strategies recognized: –Healthier home (non-toxic materials) –Reduced deforestation; support for sustainable wood production –Reduced waste (less strain on infrastructure) –Construction efficiencies  lower material costs –Support for local/regional manufacturers/producers/suppliers

Category: EQ Indoor Environmental Quality Purpose: Create healthier indoor living environments Strategies recognized: –Health and safety: reduction/control/elimination of contaminants (particulates, chemicals, gases) –Comfort: proper supply of fresh air –Control: zoned heating/cooling system –Energy efficiency/operating costs: HRV/ERV

Category: AE (NEW)Awareness & Education Purpose: Teach people to understand their home and how to maximize its performance Strategies recognized: –Consumer education: buyers learn what high-performance features are and how to keep them functioning optimally –Maximized environmental benefit: optimally functioning home continues to have lower impact –Maximized economic benefit: optimally functioning equipment produces best operational cost savings

How to participate Contact a Provider to register Assemble a Project team Perform a “Preliminary Rating” (Provider) Build Verify and test (Rater) Submit for certification (1 month or less for most) Market & sell

How do I find information on LEED Canada for homes? –Provider list –Certified projects –Pre order the reference guide (shortly) –News and sponsors –Rating System available for free download
