What you need to pass the Washington State Assessment At least 4 credible sources MLA Formatting

Where do you find credible sources? Websites that end in.edu or. Org are often better than those ending in.com…but not always! Online resources found on school library or King County websites Printed material (sometimes books, magazines or research books have helpful, well researched material for you to use)

You are required to find 5 credible sources by Wednesday Question: Once I have found the sources, what do I do? Answer: You may print the source on a numbered note card (i.e. write a number 1 on the card with the information for your first source; i.e. The Seattle Times; Sunday, April 24, 2011.) OR….

. Create a word document and place the MLA information for that source on the paper. First, go to Citation Machine and type in the correct information. Then copy and paste on your word doc. Choose a color for that entry. Works Cited Smith, Joey. “Healthier Food for our Kids." Seatown Times April 22, 2011: A1. Print. In Text Citation: (Smith A1)

What do I do next? Smith, Joey. "Health care in America." Seattle Times April 22, 2011: A1. Print. Now…every time you take notes from this source, use green font and type your notes on this document. Save it in folder you will label CBA Sources. Every time you add another source, choose another color.

Why am I doing this? When you are writing you paper, you will use this document to find the facts you need in your paper. Remember, you have to have at least 4!

How does this work? Watch this example…. You are writing a paper supporting healthier food in schools. Your thesis or position statement says: School lunches should be made with fresh, local foods that students want to eat, are low in fat and high in nutrition. You need some facts to back this up. So… you go to your Works Cited page……

…where you now have facts you can use in your paper! Works Cited Smith, Joey. “Healthier Food for our Kids." Seatown Times April 22, 2011: A1. Print. In Text Citation: (Smith A1) When middle school kids in a Los Angeles suburb were served fresh, healthy food that had been prepared at their school, instead of shipped frozen in boxes, they were happy to eat it. “Though they missed the tater tots and chicken nuggets at first, they quickly began enjoying the sushi, gourmet pasta and smoothies” (Smith A1). Davis, Cooper. “Jamie Oliver Takes on the LA School District”. Los Angeles Union Tribune April 1, 2011: Online. In Text Citation (Davis). Jamie Oliver, a chef from London, went to Los Angeles to help the schools find better ways to feed their students. The School district wouldn’t let him in to any of their cafeterias or schools. He tried to make the schools stop serving flavored milk. Some kids said they weren’t allowed to even bring food from home but had to eat what the schools served.

I still don’t get it! Keep watching! Now…you are writing a paragraph and need a fact! Paragraph 3 – Second strongest argument Students in schools will eat what tastes good, even if it something new to them. (TLQ)For example, one group of middle schoolers in Los Angeles found that even “though they missed the tater tots and chicken nuggets at first, they quickly began enjoying the sushi, gourmet pasta and smoothies” (Smith A1).

Now you should know: How to create a working document with all of your sources listed How to list your sources in MLA format How to embed sources in your paper. Later, we will learn how to create your official WORKS CITED page…. It will be the last thing you will do prior to turning in your research paper! If you would still rather use note cards, you may…I just think this is easier!
