If your goal is to lead a healthier life style in 2009, you may want to consider participating with your colleagues in Shape-Up RI. Shape-Up RI is a statewide exercise and weight loss challenge that encourages participants to pursue healthy lifestyles through physical activities and better nutrition. Highlights of the 2008 competition included: *12,012 participants *Total participant weight loss of 30,265 pounds/average participant lost 7.1 pounds *The average participant exercised 4.8 hours per week Participants compete in teams in the areas of weight loss, exercise hours, and pedometer steps. The competition begins on Monday, February 9 th and will continue for 12 weeks. There is a $20 registration fee which will provide participants with: *a digital pedometer *competition log book * weekly health newsletter *free access to hundreds of health education opportunities *eligibility for prize giveaways If you are interested in participating on a Bryant team or want to learn more from Bryant colleagues who participated in the competition last year, please plan on attending one of two informational meetings which will be held on Wednesday, January 21 st at Noon or Tuesday, January 27 th at 1:00 PM in the lobby of the Wellness Center. Bryant University is now offering individual and small group personal training programs. These programs are available in the areas of strength training, cardiovascular training and flexibility and core training (yoga and Pilates). INDIVIDUAL RATES: Single Session: $55/hour Four or more session package: $50/hour GROUP RATES: 2 people: $35/hour per person 3 or 4 people $20/hour per person 5 or 6 people $15/hour per person Training will be offered by Jodi Lamagna. Jodi is an ACE certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor. She has worked at Bryant University teaching group exercise classes since Jan She also leads yoga and flexibility training classes for many of the varsity athletic teams. She trained many Bryant faculty and staff members in small group personal training sessions during the summer of 2007 to help them achieve their fitness and weight loss goals. Jodi is also a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym. She has helped her clients to lose weight and to rehabilitate injuries after they have completed their physical therapy requirements. She has also trained clients for physical fitness exams such as the firefighter and police exams and has helped clients increase strength and flexibility. She has provided sport specific training for clients who compete in many different athletic areas. March – April Tuesdays 4:45pm-5:45pm Beginning 3/24 for 7 weeks Nick’s Place Bryant Center, 2 nd Floor Stability Ball This class will guide participants through some basic low impact aerobic activities that will strengthen the entire body with a focus on the core muscles of the abdomen, back, and hips. The Stability Ball Plus class offers a new way of working with the ball, incorporating additional training moves, which may include Pilates; yoga; cardio dance; kickboxing; strength training using body weight, resistance bands, and/or tubing; and more February – April 10 weeks More Information to Follow Magic Skill (Weight Management) Participants will receive practical nutrition, stress and exercise information, presented in a fun, hands-on format in a supportive environment. The class size is 8-20 participants and is led by a Registered Dietitian and/or Health Educators. The Magic Skill welcomes participants who are in all stages of weight management—from beginners to those who are already maintaining their weight loss. This course includes team competitions with chances to win health-oriented prizes. By the end of the program, participants will be able to: calculate their calorie needs and Body Mass Index (BMI); develop an exercise program, recognize the relationship between stress and nutrition, and learn how to get through fitness “plateaus”; and much more.
