Presentation transcript:

“Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.”

Aims of the session Consider why we need to focus on literacy and how it could be addressed across the curriculum To give some food for thought about how we can develop literacy in the classroom so that it becomes embedded.

Another fad? Teacher’s Standards 2012 All teacher should: demonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and he correct use of standard English, whatever the teacher’s specialist subject.

Putting OFSTED expectations aside... Improving literacy and learning can have an impact on pupils’ self- esteem, motivation and behaviour. It allows students to learn independently. It is empowering to both students and staff.

raising standardsGood literacy skills are a key factor in raising standards across all subjects and preparing students for life beyond school. Language is the main medium we use for teaching, learning and developing thinking, so it is at the heart of teaching and learning. Literacy is best taught as part of the subject, not as an add-on.

On each table there is an envelope with literacy strands taken from various subject specifications. Match the strands to the subjects.

Ideas are well structured and organised in a clear and appropriate form. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are used accurately. Specialist terms are used frequently and effectively. Business The report is mostly: i) accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar so that the meaning is clear. ii) well organised with a clear format and contains specialist vocabulary where appropriate. Electronics Ensure that text is legible and that spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate so that meaning is clear select and use a form and style of writing appropriate to purpose and to complex subject matter organise information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate. ART use correct and accurate notation and vocabulary organise their work clearly use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar in any explanations they are asked to provide. MATHS ensure that text is legible and that spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate so that meaning is clear select and use a form and style of writing appropriate to purpose and to complex subject matter organise information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate. In this specification QWC will be assessed in Section B of the written examination paper for Units 1, 3 and 5 by means of the ability to use relevant technical terms, applied correctly and consistently, and the quality of written English in extended answer questions. PE ensure that text is legible and that spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate so that meaning is clear select and use a form and style of writing appropriate to purpose and to complex subject matter organise information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate. In this specification Quality of Written Communication (QWC) is assessed in units 1, 2, 3 and 4 by means of longer response questions. These questions are clearly indicated in each question paper. In these questions, candidates cannot obtain full marks unless they address the three bullet points listed in this section. CHEMISTRY

How could a focus for literacy be developed within your subject? How is literacy currently addressed within your subject? Moving forward

What’s next? As soon as the students start on Wednesday, we will be following the key literacy requirements for the first half term. Handouts are available on your table which clarify each element. These will be displayed in every classroom. Consistency is key!
