Designing for the Xbox LIVE environment Keep it Simple Viewers don’t read TV Screens. Keep text short and to a minimum. Keep it big Small graphics and thin lines below 2px in thickness don’t render well on TVs. Best to avoid them. Design from a distance Remember viewers are not seeing the screen up close, so content needs to be larger and clear enough to be viewed from 6-8 ft away with no eye strain. Easy Navigation The navigation of your design should be simple and intuitive. Remember that users are navigating your BDE with a controller that has movements that are limited to left, right, up and down as well as the “X, Y, A, B” buttons. Aspect Ratio All BDEs should be optimally designed to work within a 16:9 aspect ratio. Pixel aspect ratio: Square Resolution: 1280 x 720px (720p) Safe Area: 816 x 612px Keep all content within the safe viewing area. Background imagery will always be subject to cropping on the Standard Definition (SD) television. Colours on TV TV safe colours must be used to avoid visual disturbances. Avoid saturated colours in areas of small detail. Preview colours for TV using Photoshop’s built-in NTSC filter. Images or layers must first be rasterised to apply this filter. Maximum White: RGB 235, 235, 235 or Hex #ebebeb Maximum Black: RGB 15, 15, 15 or Hex #0f0f0f No colours can be above this white threshold or below this black threshold. Fonts The recommended minimum font size for use in your BDE and banner ad is 18 point. All text should be legible from a comfortable viewing distance approximately 6 – 8 ft. away.
