Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V & Failover Clustering Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V & Failover Clustering Management for the private cloud Platform for the private cloud

In this session, we will – Focus on clustering enhancements in Windows Server 2012 Discuss how VMM 2012 SP1 enables seamless management of these new capabilities. NOTE: This is an early preview!!! None of these VMM features are available in the CTP-2 builds of VMM 2012 SP1

Massive clusters & CSV2

Windows Server 2012 supports an industry best 4,000 VMs per cluster and can now massively scale out to 64 nodes in a cluster... Scale up Scale out... Effortless management

Windows Server 2012 – Next generation Scale-out app platform Supports file servers - File based (SMB) storage for Hyper-V Improved backup Direct I/O for more scenarios Better VM creation and copy performance Multi-subnet support VMM 2012 SP1 will: Support CSV2 and CSVFS for Windows Server 2012 clusters Support converting available storage to CSV2 and vice-versa Continue to support CSV v1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 CSV2 is enabled by default for Windows Server 2012 based clusters.

Preferred Owners

VMM 2012 SP1 will: Refresh existing preferred owners settings configured on the cluster. Enable you to add, edit & remove preferred owners from VMM console & PowerShell. ‘Remember’ this setting as long as the VM remains within the cluster – lost if moved to a standalone host/different cluster. You cannot set preferred owners during new VM creation You cannot set preferred owners during new VM template creation

Placement/Dynamic & Power Optimization On VMM 2012 SP1: Warning when trying to place VM to a node that is not in the VM’s preferred owners list. Dynamic optimization will move VMs that are not on a preferred owner. Maintenance mode ignores this setting (i.e., not a hard block) Preferred owners will be ignored in overcommit calculations.

Possible Owners

VMM 2012 SP1 will: Refresh existing possible owners settings configured on the cluster. Enable you to add, edit & remove possible owners from VMM console & PowerShell. ‘Remember’ this setting as long as the VM remains within the cluster – lost if moved to a standalone host/different cluster. You cannot set possible owners during new VM creation You cannot set possible owners during new VM template creation

Placement/Dynamic & Power Optimization On VMM 2012 SP1: Zero stars when trying to place to a node that is not in the VM’s possible owners list. DO will move VMs that are not on a possible owner. VMs will not be migrated to a node that is not a possible owner. VMM Maintenance mode ignores this setting (i.e., not a hard block) “Can’t calculate over-commit” warning - for VMs with custom possible owners configured.

VM Priority

High Medium Low

VMM 2012 SP1 will: Refresh existing VM priority settings configured for VMs on the cluster. Enable you to configure VM priority from VMM console & PowerShell. ‘Remember’ this setting even across VM migration (VM priority moves with VM). Setting ignored for VMs on standalone, Win 7 cluster, ESX & Xen hosts You can set VM priority during new VM creation You can set VM priority during new VM template creation VMM placement engine ignores VM priority – enforced by the failover cluster Maintenance mode ignores VM priority.

VMM Availability Sets

You can configure VM anti-affinity on Windows failover clusters: Feature available on Windows Server 2008 R2 & Windows Server 2012 Keeps specific VMs off the same cluster node. On failover clusters, VMM 2012 SP1 Availability Sets leverages cluster anti-affinity: VMM will automatically create anti-affinity class names in accordance with configured availability set. For Windows Server 2008 R2 & Windows Server 2012 clusters

Availability Set: “DCs” Availability Set  configurable anti- affinity rules for VMs VMM 2012 SP1 ensures VMs are placed on different hosts for better availability. VMM Placement algorithm offers suggestions based on availability sets. Works across: Standalone (non-clustered) Hyper-V hosts* Hyper-V clusters* Xen Server hosts VMware hosts * Windows Server 2008 R2 & Windows Server 2012 based hosts

VMM 2012 SP1 will: Enable you to add, edit, rename & remove availability sets from VMM console & PowerShell. Create required anti-affinity class names on failover clusters when you create availability sets. Refresh existing anti-affinity class names set using Failover Cluster manager or PowerShell cmdlets. ‘Remember’ this setting across migrations. Enable self-service users to create service instances that leverage availability sets. You can: Assign multiple availability sets to a VM. Add unlimited number of VMs per availability set.

Placement/Dynamic & Power Optimization On VMM 2012 SP1: Warnings displayed when trying to place VMs belonging to an availability set on the same host. DO will try to fix cases where VMs in an availability set are on same cluster node. VMM Maintenance mode ignores this setting (i.e., not a hard block)

VMM Services can leverage ‘Availability Sets’ Availability sets – configured at the machine tier level Ensures that VM instances of a machine tier are placed on different hosts. SSUs can request availability sets for their VMs Simple checkbox experience Available from the VMM Service Template Designer

Security/Compliance Can US govt. get access to my data ? What happens if cloud gets hacked ? What happens if cloud operations person want to misuse this data ? Can Steve Ballmer get access to my data ? You are safe for all of the above as data is always encrypted and private key is with YOU and not in cloud. Can I control where data reside ?- Yes Networking Compression Network Throttling
