Presentation transcript:

 In English, sentences have a subject and a verb.  The subject is the person or thing that is being described or is doing something.  The verb is the action word like run or sing, or a word like am, is or are that links the subject to a description.  Mrs. Perez is my teacher.  She is from Madrid.

 In Spanish, sentences also have a subject and a verb.  La señora Perez es mi profesora.  Ella es de Madrid.

 Both English and Spanish use nouns as subjects.  Nouns can be replaced with pronouns.  Some examples of Spanish pronouns you have seen are yo, él, ella, tú, nosotros/as, vosotros/as, usted and ustedes.  Juan es un compañero de clase. › Juan is a classmate.  Él es mi mejor amigo. › He is my best friend.

 English sentences always have a subject or a subject pronoun.  But in Spanish the subject or the subject pronoun can be left out if everyone knows who you’re talking about. Maria is my friend.Maria es mi amiga. She is from Spain.Es de España. (Ella can be left out.)

 Ramiro es mi mejor amigo. Es de Cuba. Es un compañero de clase.  Maria es una muchacha. Es de Puerto Rico.  *If it is clear who is being talked about, the proper name or pronoun can be left out.

 Students in Spanish-speaking countries address teachers in several ways.  Women may be called by their title and first name (señorita Rosa) or by title and last name (señorita Garcia).  If the teacher is older, she may be addressed as doña with her first name, such as doña Josefina.  Men may be addressed as don Pablo (title and first name) or se señor Gomez (title and last name).  How is this similiar/different to the way you address your teachers?

A. es B. Susana C. companera

A. muchacho B. es C. amigo

A. Yo B. soy C. Peru

A. Don Pablo B. es C. mi

A. es B. Ella C. una

 You’re going to get a classmate’s name from a bag. You’re task is to draw an appropriate picture to represent them, then write 8-10 sentences about them.  Underline the subject in a specific color, circle the verb in another color and draw a squiggly line under the adjective in another color. Do NOT repeat colors.

 El señor Dusso es alto.  Él es inteligente.  Él es simpatico.  Él es extrovertido.
