MARK’S GOSPEL THE SIMPLICITY AND POWER OF JESUS

Jesus’ Kingdom Passion in Healing 1:40-45

Review 1.Jesus came into the region of the Sea of Galilee preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom. 2.He called the first of His disciples to follow Him. 3.In the Capernaum synagogue Mark records Jesus teaching as well as His first recorded deliverance of a demon…amazed at authority. 4.Jesus finished the day in Peter’s and Andrew’s house and ministering to the entire village in the evening in healings and deliverances. 5.Jesus priority of prayer… 6.Jesus now in the greater region of Galilee.

Mark 1:40–45 (ESV) And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

Luke 5:12 (ESV) While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”

A Leper’s Audacious Initiativevs. 40 Mark 1:40 (ESV) And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”

The Leper’s Physical Condition The infection is characterized by abnormal changes of the skin. Because the organism grows best at lower temperatures the leprosy bacillus has a preference for the skin, the mucous membranes and the nerves. Infection in and destruction of the nerves leads to sensory loss. Inadequate care causes infection of open wounds. Gangrene may also follow, causing body tissue to die and become deformed. WARNING REGARDING NEXT SLIDE!

The Leper’s Self-image “The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted.” Mother Teresa The Leper’s Healing Faith

The Lord’s Response Mark 1:41–42 (LEB) And becoming angry, he stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be made clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy went away from him and he was made clean.

The Lord’s Directionverse Mark 1:43–45 (LEB) And warning him sternly, he sent him away at once. 44 And he said to him, “See to it that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and bring for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. 45 But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread abroad the account, so that he was no longer able to enter publicly into a town. But he was staying outside in deserted places, and they were coming to him from all directions.
