4 | Hyper-Urban Farming 2

© 2013 Institute for the Future for Rockefeller Foundation. All rights reserved. SR-1563B As more people move into hyper-dense cities, leaving villages and making subsistence farming a thing of the past, the adaptation of farming practices to urban settings will be paramount in attaining future resilience and wellbeing. Urban farming will continue to explore innovations such as vertical farming and will use permaculture principles to increase sustainability and self-sufficiency. At the same time, micro-scale bioscience will make products from urban farms more nutritious and mitigate toxicity concerns. 3 4 | Hyper-Urban Farming | Future Innovation © 2013 Institute for the Future for Rockefeller Foundation. Some of the concepts in this story are already going mainstream, but players pushed the boundaries as they suggested urban fishing with recycled wastewater, enhancing urban food sources with micronutrients and microfluidic water sources, and connecting urban farming strategies to story-rich games, thereby promoting community investment. One player warned about the potentially dangerous side effects of using contaminated soil for urban farming. 4 4 | Hyper-Urban Farming | From the Players © 2013 Institute for the Future for Rockefeller Foundation.
