HAZE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Introduction…

☼Forest fires in South east asia caused by Indonesia. ☼Has been on the rise since 2006 ☼Has attracted global attention ☼Even foreign newspapers have been reporting these hazes. ☼Forest fires causing haze are on the rise but none has been as bad as Indonesia’s

Causes…

♂Slash and burn in Indonesia ♂Caused by farmers ♂Fastest way to clear excess trees ♂Trees are burnt to clear the forests for more space ♂Also makes soil more fertile ♂Done in mostly Sumatra and Kalimantan ♂Known as Agriculture burning activities ♂These fires cause large scale smokes ♂Smoke is being carried by the wind

Impacts…

IMPACTS BROUGHT BY THE HAZE PART 1 Temperature is hotter than usual  Increase of opening air-cons  More fossil fuels are used  Increase in the emission of carbon dioxide  Increase of bills in terms of the amount of electricity with more usage of air-cons Cancellation of planned programmes such as training for competition and other activities Increased sales of air purifiers Increased of websites surfing causing great traffic in the internet (indoors activities) Reduction of the visibility: Ports lose business due to loss in visibility (e.g. big economic loss for countries that rely on trading like Singapore)

IMPACTS BROUGHT BY THE HAZE PART 2 Health symptoms due to haze ♦Red/ sore eyes ♦Sore throat ♦Rashes ♦Respiratory difficulties ♦Asthma Low air quality Loss of biodiversity (loss of flora and fauna) Slowing construction sites progress

IMPACTS BROUGHT BY THE HAZE PART 2 Economic loss:  Air  Land  Sea transportation  Construction  Tourism (tourists are discouraged to travel to affected countries)  Agricultural industries  Fire-related damages Less work, Less business------Less income Pollution causes global warming and climate change

Measures…

MEASURES TO PREVENT HAZE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA ♣Financial incentives for farmers such that they can buy proper land-clearing tools. ♣Educate the farmers about the consequences about the 'slash- and-burn' technique and teach them alternative methods to clear land. ♣Set up laws to deal with farmers and corporations who caused the haze. Eg. Farmers who repeatedly use 'slash-and-burn' techniques will be jailed. ♣Cooperation between countries to address and solve this issue.
