Alienated Characters and Society By: Neal Whetstone, Brittnie Smithley, Josie Blackburn, Regem Biyo, and Daniel Hayes, Thomas Milbrath

Literal Meaning of the Prompt “Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society because of gender, race, class, or creed. Choose a novel or a play in which such a character plays a significant role and show how the character’s alienation reveals the surrounding society’s assumptions or moral values.” -Some AP Writer Literal Meaning of the Prompt (Read The Title) (Read) Original Prompt (pull out Thomas) Thanks Regem! And now for the Literal meaning: “Writers emphasize the characteristics of a certain culture or society by using characters who are rejected from that culture or society due to their gender, race, class, or creed. Pick a novel or play in which a character who is rejected from a culture or society plays an important role in showing the society’s moral values.”

Relationship with Frankenstein The creature is alienated because of his horrific appearance. Victor was also alienated in the process of making The Creature Read Title Read Slide Text Then explain the relationship: Society assumed that he was evil just because of his looks. Eventually after being judged this way over and over the creature sought his revenge on human kind. Guilty! Of being ratchet!

Example “I paused. This, I thought, was the moment of decision, which was to rob me of, or bestow happiness on me forever. I struggled vainly for maining strength; I sank on the chair and sobbed aloud. At that moment I heard the steps of m younger protectors. I had not a moment to lose but, seizing the hand of the old man, I cried, ‘Now is the time!– save and protect me! You and your family are the friends whom I seek. Do not you desert me in the hour of trial!’ ‘Great God!’ exclaimed the old man, ‘who are you?’ At that instant The cottage Door was opened, and Felix, Safie, and Agatha entered. Who can describe their horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted; and Safie, unable to attend her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung: in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick.” Introduce Explain how it relates the example supports your reason for how our prompt relates to the novel.

Another Example “My cheek had grown pale with study, and my person had become emaciated with confinement” (Shelley 32). “At these moments I took refuge in the most perfect solitude. I passed whole days alone on the lake alone in a little boat” (Shelley 108).

Frankenstein creating his monster Pivotal Moment One Frankenstein creating his monster This moment is significant with our prompt because not only did the creature turn out to be alienated by society, but Victor alienated himself in the process. This moment is significant with our prompt because not only did the creature turn out to be alienated by society, but Victor alienated himself in the process. Victor leaves home and for two years doesn’t visit, he became “pale with study” and “emaciated with confinement”, and he didn’t even go outside to enjoy nature or write many letters to his family (Shelley 32). Even though he is not alienated by society, he alienates himself to focus on the work that he is so motivated and passionate about and it still affects the society around him. Victor’s alienating himself reveals surrounding society’s assumptions whenever Henry comes to visit and Victor acts like a complete mad-man and makes poor Henry question if his friend is crazy, especially when he sees the “wildness in [Victor’s] eyes” and is frightened by his “unrestrained, heartless laughter” (Shelley 38).

The Creature saves the Drowning Girl Pivotal Moment Two The Creature, sore after his rejection by the cottage family, chooses to save a drowning girl. The Creature saves the Drowning Girl This moment of significant because the creature, already with a failing faith in mankind decides out of the goodness of his heart to save a young girl from drowning. He is then punished for his good deed by being shot by her male guardian, because he was afraid the creature was the one actually harming her. This triggers the ultimate destruction in his trust in man and brings out the evil from within the creature.

First Person Point of View “It is with considerable difficulty that I remember the original era of my being: all the events of that period appear confused and indistinct” (Shelley 70). Say definition: When a character from the story tells the story from their own point of view. Read & Explain Quote: This is the opening statement of the creature’s tale which is told from his own point of view to Dr. Frankenstein, an example of first person point of view.

Foreshadowing   “He had apparently been strangled; for there was no sign of violence, except black marks of fingers on his neck." [Chapter XXI, page 128, bottom of second paragraph] Shelley uses foreshadowing and causes the reader to connect to the murder of Henry to the creature. And Later, Just like the murder of Henry, William was strangled, with brutal force, and left outside to be found.

Metaphor "Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. A new species would bless me as its creator and source" Without using "like" or "as", Mary Shelley manages to suggest that life and death are essentially ideal bounds. She elaborates and says that birth is something to break through, and death is often associated with darkness...etc.

Oxymoron “I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and hellish triumph” (Shelley 102). Read Definition: Figure of speech containing two conflicting terms. Read and Explain quote: “Hellish triumph” is an oxymoron Shelley uses to describe the creature’s happiness in being able to cause destruction.

Thesis! The monster was. The grotesque monster was ironically good. In Frankenstein the grotesque monster was ironically good among a judgmental society. In Frankenstein the grotesque monster, Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creation, was ironically good among a judgmental society. In Frankenstein the grotesque monster, Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creation, was ironically good among a judgmental society until he was twisted into the monster that was expected. In Frankenstein the grotesque monster, Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creation, was ironically good among a judgmental society, until he was twisted into the monster that was expected by his master abandoning him, his treatment after rescuing a girl from drowning, and finally the abortion of his equally hideous mate. Thesis!
