What is the Goal of the Christian Life?

Psalm 27:4 NASB One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to meditate in His temple.

Luke 10:41-42 NASB But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

John 14:21 NASB He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.

John 17:3 NASB This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Goal of the Spiritual Life is: INTIMACY WITH GOD

Trying to Be Godly vs. Training to Be Godly

Yieldedness Unreservedly opening up my life to God; Actively depending on His resources

1 Corinthians 9:25 NASB Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 NASB But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Training for Godliness Training for godliness is simply learning how to arrange my life around activities that enable me to live yielded to the Spirit (often called spiritual disciplines).

Myths of Spiritual Disciplines Spiritual Disciplines are NOT a barometer of spirituality. Spiritual Disciplines are NOT necessarily unpleasant. Spiritual Disciplines are NOT a way to earn favor with God.

Signs of Wise Spiritual Training Respects Freedom of Spirit Respects Temperament and Gifts Takes into Account Seasons of Life Respects Inevitability of Peaks and Valleys Begins with a Clear Decision

Application Before Meeting: Prepare to Lead and Love  God, what are you saying to me about my own life?  God, where am I proud, cold, scared and hooked?  God, what do you want to accomplish in this meeting?  God, how can I best love each member of my group? During Meeting: Be Attentive to God’s Voice  God, what should I challenge?  God, what should I encourage?  God, where is the scriptural support? After Meeting: Evaluate & Respond  God, how should I follow up with each member?  God, how can I intentionally help each member grow closer to Christ?  God, what did I learn about my own heart and the heart of God?

Q & A

Discussion Questions 1. How do you maintain intimacy with Christ without it becoming a check list of spiritual to do’s? 2. In your own life, explain where you TRY to be godly versus TRAIN to be godly. 3. What are the areas of your life where you need to build spiritual disciplines? 4. What is one thing you can do in the next week that will build intimacy with Christ?
