Victoria E. Van Wie and Alan M. Gross

 15% of women have been forced into sexual intercourse by a date (Koss, 1988; Muehlenhard & Linton, 1987).  Women exhibit clear refusal behaviors that are ignored by their partners.  College men rated a female’s asking a man on a date, paying the dating expenses, and her willingness to go to his apartment after a date as indicators of the woman’s desire for sexual discourse (332).  Shotland and Craig argue that men have a comparatively larger sexual appetite.

 190 males- 90.2% Caucasian  years  Mean of age: years old Men were divided by their beliefs about women Listened to audiotapes and were told to signal when the women wanted the man to stop-listen to whole thing ▪ 3 different No’s: Plain NO, Excuse NO, and Relationship NO ▪ Different intimacy levels- kissing to breast grabbing

 Absence of emotional involvement  Do not know him well enough  Too soon  Pregnancy/Disease  Distrust  Waiting until marriage  No desire to have sex with him

 Response Latency- length of time it takes men to say women say to stop  Sexual Experience Survey- measure sexual experience of men  Social Desire Scale- questionnaire testing whether person tries to be socially acceptable  Demographic- religion, age, school, and how much they attend church

 Marriage and pregnancy excuse – seen as “non-negotiable”  Relationship excuse is “negotiable” - increased information regarding the status of relationship would affect the progression of sexual activity (341)

 The content of woman’s refusal combined with the level of intimacy at which this explanation is provided may affect how seriously her “NO” will be taken by her partner (343).  Good ways to avoid rape:  Stop at lower intimacy levels- kissing  Give good reason, with explanation  Strong “NO”
