Presentation transcript:

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Lubricate the Caliper Calipers manufactured be fore 1991 have one grease fitting and a relief valve. There are two versions of this caliper. They differ in the location of the grease fitting.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Lubricate the Caliper Calipers manufactured after 1991 have two grease fittings. One is in the caliper body. One is in the caliper cap.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Lubricate the Caliper Lubricate every 6 months or 2 to four times during the life of the lining. Proper lubricating procedure is critical to avoid brake drag.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Caliper Lube Procedure 1.Adjust slack adjuster to the pads are tight on the rotor. 2.Plug the pressure relief valve by holding a finger over the poppet. 3.Apply through the caliper fitting first and then through the end cap fitting until grease flows out of the seal at the camshaft cap. 4.Remove relief valve and completely back off the slack adjuster. 5.Reinstall relief valve. 6.Adjust the brakes.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Adjusting brake clevis position. Correct clevis position is critical to operation of the ArvinMeritor ASA. Incorrect clevis position can cause an under or over adjustment condition. Use the correct template ( yellow for ADB) to set clevis length.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Brake Adjustment Initial free stoke and in-service free stroke are adjust differently Initial free stroke ( new pads) must be checked with a bar and ruler. The initial free stroke should be between 7/8” and 1 1/8” In service free stroke ( 50 applications under a normal duty cycle) can be checked with the template or a bar and ruler. If measure with a ruler in in service free stroke should be between ¾” and 7/8”. If measured with the template the in service free stroke should be between the min/max lines.

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Applied Stroke Brake Adjustment Check

Air Disc Brake Maintenance Burnish Brakes 1. Adjust brakes manually. 2.Apply brakes ten times (snubs) from 20 – 25 mph at regular intervals of 500 ft. without stopping the vehicle. 3.After the tenth brake application (snub), make one complete stop from 20 to 0 mph. 4.Check drum and or rotor temperature immediately after burnishing. Any drum or rotor significantly cooler than the other indicate a lack of braking effort on those wheels. Repeat burnishing.
