4 ∙ BACKGROUND The development and investment in CFMA is being made against the background of a new era of political and civil stability in Angola. There is significant demand for maritime professionals within Sonangol as well as the oil and service companies based in Angola. CFMA will make a significant contribution to the promotion of the maritime infrastructure in Angola, leading to eventual accreditation on the ‘White List’ of internationally recognized Maritime Authorities with mutual recognition of Flag State Certification.

Sonangol Business Areas Upstream/mid stream activities. Sonangol’s is active in the prospecting, exploration, production and marketing of hydrocarbons. Oil Derivatives. The grease and lubricants of the brand NGOL are produced and marketed by Sonangol Air Transportation. The core business of Sonair is to provide air transportation to the oil industry through a fleet of airplanes and helicopters. Sonair also offers international destinations to some countries in Africa and a direct passenger and cargo flight to Houston, Texas (Houston Express). Maritime Transportation (Crude and its Derivatives). Sonangol’s shipping activities cover a number of areas – the ownership of 5 Suezmax’s, the building of 3 LNG carriers, the ownership/commercial control of 12 clean product cabotage/storage tankers in Angola and the training of Angolan cadets and ratings to sail on these ships. Telecommunications. Telecommunication services for the Sonangol group are carried out by MSTelecom whose expertise are three types of communication systems: radio transmission, microwave telecommunications and national and international satellite VSAT communications. Professional Training. Essa provides professional training specifically related to work safety in the oil industry and the teaching of English.

18 ∙ City of Glasgow College is ideally equipped to further the acceptance of the CFMA curriculum by both the UK MCA and other administrations such as the South African Marine Safety Agency (SAMSA). On 1 st September 2010, GCNS was one of three colleges which merged to form City of Glasgow College which then assumed all the GCNS responsibilities with respect to the contract with CFMA. City of Glasgow College has a particular focus on the maritime industry and is one of only three such colleges in the UK, and the only one in Scotland, offering the full range of short and mainstream marine courses. City of Glasgow College has significant experience in the development of nautical curricula and has an excellent reputation for its academic provision, both in the UK and internationally.
