12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD3 The HD experience – a revolution in home cinema, TV, digital entertainment and more Why does HD matter? HD DVD is the next-generation DVD standard Like VHS and DVD, HD DVD promises to introduce a significant transformation of the home entertainment and the home cinema experience. Here's why and how... HD DVD enables the recording and playback of HDTV programs  HDTV will gradually become the norm, particularly with the shift to digital TV. Increasingly, HD content is available online  Broadband users will want to download, play and store this content on computing devices and digital storage media

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD4 The HD experience – a revolution in home cinema, TV, digital entertainment and more HD viewing is possible on many computers today  With a video resolution of up to 1080p (approximately six times the resolution of today's DVD video) – Microsoft ® Windows Media ® 9 Series (WMV HD) titles provide a visually stunning experience on Windows XP-based PCs A revolution in the complete home entertainment and viewing experience is underway  HD for TV, movies, Internet, gaming and digital entertainment with computing devices. What is the revolutionary role of HD DVD?

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD5 What is HD DVD? The future of entertainment HD DVD is the next-generation DVD format for high-definition storage, playback and recording Like today‘s DVDs, HD DVD is 1.2 millimetres thick, but offers significantly more than 3 times the storage capacity Compare the single-layer DVD storage capacity of 4.7GB to the single-layer HD DVD capacity of 15GB. Double-layer HD DVDs support up to 8 hours of HD content. Triple-layer 45GB HD DVD is the maximum capacity. HD DVD discs and HD DVD drives mean that playback, content and storage of HD content will become mainstream. Toshiba HD-DVD player

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD6 How does HD DVD work? Blue laser technology HD DVD discs write data on a layer 0.6 millimeters from the surface, the same depth as current DVDs. Red laser (650 nanometers) is used for DVD today – by contrast HD DVD uses blue laser, which operates at lower wavelengths (405 nanometers) Why do nanometers matter? Shorter wavelengths suffer less diffraction, which enables a tight focus on the read-write surface. Consequently, the blue laser technology allows for more data to be stored on a disc of the same diameter as today’s standard DVD.

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD7 How does HD DVD stack up against today's DVD standard? HD DVD means... More than 3 times the storage capacity of DVD. Enough storage space for 4 hours of HD content on a single-layer 15GB HD DVD. The double-layer 30 GB HD DVD can store up to 8 hours of 1,125 scan line HD images, or up to 48 hours of 525 scan line SD images.

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD8 HD DVD storage capacities at a glance *Triple-layer HD DVD is announced only at this time. Single-layer 4 hours of HD content Dual-layer: 8 hours of HD content Triple-layer:* 12 hours of HD content

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD9 Why does HD DVD storage capacity matter? Why does storage capacity matter?  HD DVD allows an entire high-definition movie to be stored on the single side of a disc. Uninterrupted viewing  No need to turn over or change discs part way through. This is why HD DVD storage capacity is so important. More digital content  Plenty of room for special features in addition to the HD movie on HD DVDs Support for enhanced video formats  MPEG-2 SD/HD, H.264, VC-1 Support for high-quality audio formats  PCM (Pulse Code Modulation), Dolby TrueHD (MLP), Dolby Digital +, DTS HD Support for iHD technology  Support for enhanced user interactivity requires more storage

12. December 2005(c) 2005,Toshiba Europe GmbH. Sneak Preview: HD DVD10 More rugged disc format The Blu-ray disc recording occurs much closer to the surface, making it more susceptible to scratches or damage. Wide range of HD DVD supporters/promoters Includes the DVD Forum, technology leaders such as Toshiba, NEC, HP, Sanyo, Microsoft, Intel, etc. plus Hollywood and TV studios, including Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment, New Line Cinema, Warner Home Video and HBO. First-to-market advantage Available in 2006 – look for notebooks with HD DVD drives. Ideal for the digital home network HD DVD guarantees "managed copy," which lets a computer user copy a movie to a computer hard drive so it can be beamed around the house. More interactive The iHD software offers "greater interactivity," for example, letting a small screen with a movie director be overlaid onto the main video screen. Compatible manufacturing method for DVD and HD DVD HD DVD manufacturing is easier than for Blu-ray's BD-ROM because it does not require a significant change in manufacturing equipment. This means mass production is simpler, less expensive. Guaranteed future-proof compatibility for DVD users HD DVD’s "hybrid disk" feature means an owner of today's DVD player will be able to buy a dual-format disk that can be played in tomorrow's HD DVD player. How does HD DVD stack up against Blu-ray?
