“The tortoise must be far behind,” he said to himself, “I am already half-way through.

“Why not have a nap beside that tree?”And soon he fell asleep.

But the tortoise walked steadily on and on. In a short time, he passed by the sleeping hare.

The hare slept longer than he thought he would.

When he woke up at last, he looked around and saw in surprise that the tortoise was near the finishing line.

He ran as fast as he could. But it was too late. The tortoise had reached the finishing line before he could do so.

The tortoise looked back at the hare and said smilingly, “See how the slow but steady wins the race!”
