ACM SIGOPS Viability Report the special interest group on operating systems Doug Terry, SIGOPS Chair October 26, 2009

Membership 1600 members as of June 2009 – 1341 professional; 129 students Slowly decreasing over past four years Significantly down from 6801 in 1990 Dues : $15/year ($5/year for students) Not a cause for concern

Conferences Thriving set of top-quality conferences SOSP: our flagship symposium held Oct – record attendance: 500+ – 9 co-located workshops – Barbara Liskov’s Turing Award lecture EuroSys being held annually in Europe Many co-sponsored with other SIGs – PODC (with SIGACT), ASPLOS (with SIGPLAN, SIGARCH), SenSys (with SIGMOBILE et al.), VEE (with SIGPLAN) Cooperate with USENIX on OSDI, FAST, etc. New SOCC conference (with SIGMOD)!

Announcing: First Annual ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing (SOCC) Co-sponsored by SIGMOD and SIGOPS To be held June 10-11, 2010 with SIGMOD in Indianapolis Submission deadline: Jan. 15 Call for Papers available General Chair: Joe Hellerstein PC Chairs: Surajit Chaudhuri Mendel Rosenblum Steering committee: Phil Bernstein Ken Birman Joe Hellerstein John Ousterhout Raghu Ramakrishnan Doug Terry John Wilkes

Finances Healthy fund balance: $571,290 – steadily increasing Budget guided by well-defined principles – e.g. DL revenue pays for student travel grants Planned for a loss at SOSP 2009 conference – but failed!

Benefits Operating Systems Review revamped contents – distributed to all members Proceedings as a “member plus” package Awards regularly given at conferences – Mark Weiser Award: Eric Brewer – Dijkstra Prize: Joseph Halpern and Yoran Moses Student travel grants Web site, mailing list, DL access, etc.

Issues and Challenges Few takers for new “proceedings” package Editor-in-Chief for TOCS not yet appointed Growing dissatisfaction with ACM copyright policy Increase outreach to other parts of the world (e.g. Asia, Australia, South America) Co-location with USENIX conferences
