WORDS: THE POWER WITHIN Silver Edition – Lesson 13 Interesting Places

DIA  Diagonal  Dia + gon (angle) + al (related to)  Literal definition – related to angle across  Dictionary definition – (n) a straight line joining two opposite corners of a square, rectangle, or other straight-sided shape; (adj) referring to a line joining two opposite corners  Write the hypotenuse measurement on the diagonal.

DIA  Diagram  Dia + gram (write)  Literal definition – write across; write through  Dictionary definition – (n) a simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something; (v) to make a simplified drawing of something  Use the diagram to help with the problem.  We diagramed the layout of the warehouse.

DIA – ACROSS, THROUGH  Diameter  Dia + meter (measure)  Literal definition – measure across; measure through  Dictionary definition – (n) a straight line passing from side to side through the center of a figure, especially a circle or sphere  The diameter of a circle is two times the radius.

EM (EN)  Embark  Em + barque (ship)  Literal definition – inside ship; within ship  Dictionary definition – (v) to go aboard a ship, aircraft, or other vehicle; to begin a course of action, especially one that is important or challenging.  Perseus embarked on his quest to save Andromeda.

EM (EN)  Embrace  Em + bracchium (arm)  Literal definition – within arm; inside arm  Dictionary definition – (v) to hold someone close as a sign of affection; to accept or support a belief, theory, or change; (n) the act of holding someone close to show affection  After being gone for several months, I greeted my friend with a warm embrace.

EM (EN) – INSIDE, WITHIN  Endanger  En + dangier (power, control)  Literal definition – within control  Dictionary definition – (v) to put someone or something at risk or in danger  Risky stunts might endanger any spectators who are standing nearby.

PERI  Perigee  Peri + geo (earth)  Literal definition – around earth  Dictionary definition – (n) the point in the orbit of the moon or a satellite at which it is nearest to the earth  A full moon at its perigee will be larger than normal in the night sky.

PERI  Perimeter  Peri + meter (measure)  Literal definition – measure around  Dictionary definition – (n) the continuous line forming the boundary of a closed geometric figure  The perimeter of the room can be calculated by measuring the length of all four walls and adding them together.

PERI - AROUND  Peripheral  Peri + pherein (carry, bear) + al (related to)  Literal definition – related to carrying around  Dictionary definition – (adj) located on the edge of something; of secondary or minor importance  The peripheral office complex is located outside the main building.

PRO  Proactive  Pro + act (do) + ive (capable of)  Literal definition – capable of doing before  Dictionary definition – (adj) creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened  Proactive students study for tests ahead of time instead of waiting to the last minute.

PRO  Proceed  Pro + ceed (go)  Literal definition – go forward; go forth  Dictionary definition – (v) to begin or continue a course of action; to move forward  In order to proceed on his quest, Wolfgang had to present a secret password at the door to the ancient chamber.

PRO – BEFORE, FORTH, FORWARD  Procrastinate  Pro + crastinus (tomorrow)  Literal definition – before tomorrow  Dictionary definition – (v) to delay or postpone action; to put off doing something  Proactive students don’t procrastinate and study ahead of time.

TELE  Telecommunications  Tele + communication  Literal definition – distant communication  Dictionary definition – (n) expressing a message over a distance by cable, telegraph, telephone, or broadcasting  Technology has helped speed up many aspects of telecommunications.

TELE  Telekinesis  Tele + kin (move) sis (process)  Literal definition – process of moving far  Dictionary definition – (n) the supposed ability to move objects at a distance by mental powers or other non-physical means  In X-Men Jean Grey used her telekinesis to lift objects and throw them at Sabertooth.

TELE – FAR, DISTANT  Telethon  Tele + marathon  Dictionary definition – (n) a very long television program, usually to raise money for a charity  The telethon to raise money for Haiti lasted for 3 days and was on almost every channel.
