What is SpIDERS? A multi-interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, experimental psychologists, architects, concept designers and artists Conduct research into theories of interactive content Experimental verification of theories Practical research into the nature of interactive media applications Particularly computer games SpIDERStudio Semiosphere Interactive Digital Environment Research Studio

Semiosphere: –An ecology of meaning in which differing languages and media interact Yuri Lotman, a Russian semiotician Semiotics: –The study of how humans make meaning out of the world around them S emios p here: I nteractive D igital E nvironment R esearch S tudio SpIDERStudio Semiosphere Interactive Digital Environment Research Studio

Ethos There are many ways of investigating the world: –Empirical science –Qualitative methods –Art practice and other humanities based approaches –And so on All these methods are useful, particularly in looking at games design SpIDERStudio Semiosphere Interactive Digital Environment Research Studio

Title of PhD investigation: Investigating and questioning the notion of ‘self identity’ in interactive virtual reality games environments SpIDERStudio Semiosphere Interactive Digital Environment Research Studio

Part of my project integrates an investigation of the notion of self- identity, and the possibilities of transmogrification. My area of research is to incorporate experimentation and data evaluation to assess issues involved in facilitating a change in self- identity by building an interactive model. This research project builds on my professional, working practice, using creative methodology to facilitate making art pieces in virtual reality interactive digital environments.
