What has the NMC done for us? A SWOT analysis to review the the situation “3 years on”

Strengths Better informed About what happens in other countries About how EU projects work Contacts established throughout Corridor Greater understanding of the market place

Weaknesses Information flow could have been better –With Lead Partner –With other Partner Areas (especially for development of new services) Local politics City / Shire Lack of interest from some in the area Fear of new competition Need for forward thinking for 5, 10, 20 years ahead Lack of personnel to commit to such projects

Opportunities Increased focus on Ro Ro traffic Oil & Gas developments in Barents Sea Supporting more than just the UKCS Increasing links to Faroes and Iceland Promotion of Short Sea Shipping To put Sea Transportation higher on the Political Agenda

Threats Level playing fields not yet established A risk of distortion to competition due to “free money” being handed out for otherwise unviable projects

The Future NMC II North East harbours remain interested Nestrans involvement Continuation of networking arenas Continuation of service development How will NP stay involved? Barents development is of particular interest to NS area Better information for all interested parties should be a priority. In the final year of the first project we were still discussing how to market it!
