SYMPROVE

The probiotic market is worth $32 billion globally 60% of UK/Irish households regularly purchase them A wide variety of probiotics on the market that claim to work The Probiotic Market

So, do they work? Do they contain the claimed number of viable organisms stated on the label? Do they possess the robustness to transit through the gut? Scientists at University College London (UCL) independently conducted a study that compared leading probiotic brands to find out the truth.

 Aim: To subject the products to three challenge tests to assess if the bacteria: ARRIVED In a live state SURVIVED Stomach acid transit THRIVED In the target area of the gut 4

ARRIVED Only dairy-based (Actimel, Yakult) or water- based (Symprove) probiotics delivered 100% or more than the claimed content Delivers at least 75% of the amount claimed for the product Symprove Actimel Yakult Arrived 5

SURVIVED Only two products survived stomach transit time (120 minutes), with one of these continuing to decline. nly one product seems stable After exposure, are the surviving bacteria still concentrated enough? Survived VSL#3 Symprove

TIME (h) P (µW) Symprove Dairy Dry Big Brand Dry Dry Key: Symprove survivability A real time measurement of the heat (growth) signature of the bacteria colony. Independent research at University College London (preliminary research – not yet published) Faster and stronger growth than all others The only product to grow in a realistic time to give benefit Even stronger if acid attrition in the stomach is considered

Symprove Dairy Dry Big Brand Dry Dry Key: TIME (h) P (µW) Symprove survivability post pH shock A real time measurement of the heat (growth) signature of the bacteria colony after exposure to gastric juices. Independent research at University College London (preliminary research – not yet published)

THRIVED Only three products showed signs of strong growth within 10 hours. Others showed very slow, or even no growth Thrived Colony starts growing strongly within 10 hours to hit the target areas in the gut VSL3 Actimel Symprove 9

To be successful probiotic product needs to beat all three challenge tests Safely arrive, survive stomach acids, and thrive in the target area of the gut Only one product met all three challenges - with several products failing all three challenges Summary 10

Overall results 11

Irritable Bowel Syndrome 1 in 5 households contain someone with IBS Despite the high prevalence the condition is extremely poorly managed Sufferers try an average of 5 products each month but around half are still left battling the symptoms long-term

+ Probiotic efficacy A probiotic product not only has to reach the gut, it also has to do something beneficial once it arrives There is a rationale for the use of probiotics in reducing IBS symptoms but rigorous clinical testing has been lacking The efficacy of Symprove has been confirmed in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study by King’s College Hospital 13

+ Study results Significant improvement was achieved in 4 weeks Improvement continued through the full 12 weeks Results show that this multi-strain probiotic is safe, well- tolerated and efficacious in improving overall symptom severity in patients with IBS 14

+ Study results The significant change in pain score is important as pain is regarded as the key measure for patient health 15

+ Study results Patients report an objectively measurable improvement in their satisfaction with their bowel habit (constipation and diarrhoea) 16
