Causes of Dysfunctional Families  Chemical Dependence  Other Addictions  Emotional Abuse  Perfectionism  Violence  Physical Abuse  Neglect  Sexual Abuse  Abandonment  Mental Disorders

Chemical Dependence/Other Addictions  Family life is neglected  Teens may follow in the footsteps of parents  Teen’s addictions may cause family problems  All energy is focused on the addiction

Perfectionism  Feeling inadequate  Overcritical of oneself  Destructive harmful behavior

Violence in the Family  Physical Force to injure damage or destroy oneself, others or property  Domestic violence – sexual, physical emotional abuse  Violent family members are usually controlling  An ongoing cycle

Abandonment  When a person chooses to give up or refuses responsibility for those in his/her care  Physical or emotional abandonment  Children who have been abandoned feel unlovable, worthless and guilty  Teens who have been abandoned are more likely to act “tough” defy authority figures, refuse to follow school rules and have negative attitudes

4 Kinds of Abuse Teens may have to deal with the following types of abuse in their families  Physical – violent treatment that results in physical injury  Sexual – sexual contact that is forced on a person by physical force or manipulation  Emotional – verbal put downs, making someone feel worthless, withholding affection in order to cause pain  Neglect – failure to provide care or guidance
