Bible Reading (Pew Bible - page 927) Jonah 1:17 and 2:1-10 1:17 But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.

What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD." 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah Praying – A Hebrew Sinner Saved Jonah: “Not about a great fish, but about a great God.” Campbell Morgan Not just about Jonah, not just about a “preacher on the run,” or a foreign people saved. So what great truth is this book telling us about God? 2:9 “Salvation comes from the LORD.”

1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) God’s Punishment and God’s Salvation coincide. 1:17 & 2:10 bracket the prayer – the fish does it’s job! What Jonah deserved (2:5b,6,7) was drowning. What he GOT was a miracle of timing, and a sign of God’s grace.

1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) Why a FISH? Why not driftwood or another ship to the rescue? His punishment was DEATH – and that is what he got! Buried for three days in the belly of a fish. Punished, but also saved. Note some words of mercy in Hosea writing soon afterwards - around 755 BC:

1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) Hosea 6:1-2: Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.

2 – A Prophet In Prayer (2:1-10) 1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) 2 - A Prayer sent from the Heart of the Sea… Boundless, swirling judgment– Psalm 88, Psalm 42. A Prayer capturing the essence of ISOLATION FROM GOD – a mini-Calvary....out of the belly of hell cried I Jonah 2:2, AV

2 – A Prophet In Prayer (2:1-10) 1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) 3 - A Prayer sent from the Heart of the Earth… V5 – ESV – “…the waters closed in over me”, or NIV margin, “…waters were at my throat.” (Burial at sea) At the very point of drowning (7-9) feeble, but praying!...out of the belly of hell cried I Jonah 2:2, AV

3 – Another Prophet From Galilee 1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) 2 – A Prophet In Prayer (2:1-10) Matthew 12:39-41: "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be…....out of the belly of hell cried I Jonah 2:2, AV

3 – Another Prophet From Galilee 1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) 2 – A Prophet In Prayer (2:1-10) Matthew 12:39-41: …three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here....out of the belly of hell cried I Jonah 2:2, AV

3 – Another Prophet From Galilee 1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) 2 – A Prophet In Prayer (2:1-10) Luke 11:30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. Who was buried in hell for you? One greater than Jonah is here!...out of the belly of hell cried I Jonah 2:2, AV
