Presentation transcript:

- If you could be more like any one living person, who would it be and why? - “write down 5 words that describe yourself on a piece of paper. Don’t write your name on the paper. Place your papers in the middle folded. After they are mixed up everybody grab a piece of paper and go around the circle and everyone should try to guess whose paper they are reading.

Break up the book of Philemon into equal parts from your group and read it out loud.

1. Paul is asking Philemon to grasp a whole new level of faith and love. Was there a time that someone or something inspired you to take a large step of growth in faith and love? Share that experience.

2. Has anyone ever had a mentor or mentored someone else at work? Do you think you become more of what you are taught or of what you caught by being with that person and going through that experience?

3. Who, are some people, in the faith, you are attempting to “caught” and “be taught” by? How is that relationship going?

Read: vs 5 4. List the two qualities that Paul knew existed in Philemon’s life. What implications might these qualities have in his life as Onesimus returns to him after wronging him? How evident are these qualities in our day to day life? Give some examples.

5. We all grow in our faith as we are sharing our faith. Spend some time sharing growing experiences you felt while sharing your faith.

Read vs 8-9 & vs At other times, Paul does seem to issue commands (consider 1 Cor. 5:3; 9:1; 2 Cor. 10:13-14; 12:12 as examples) why does he decide not to do this here? Can you think of an example when it may be best to communicate rather than command?

7. Consider Rom. 5:8-11, Eph. 2:1-4, and Col. 2:13; 3:7. How does Paul use this same terminology for our Christian lives?

Read: Jeremiah 15:19 (in the nasb if you have it) 8. What does it mean to you that we should extract the precious from the worthless? 9. What would this practice look like in our daily lives?

Read: “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” -Maria Robinson 10. What does this quote mean to you? How would you apply it to your life? How can you apply it to the lives of others?

Application: Put yourself in Philemon’s place. How would hearing these words about Onesimus change your perspective of who he is? Who is the Onesimus in your life? What restoration needs to take place from your part? How can you begin that journey this week?
