Ku Klux Klan From the Greek “Kuklos” meaning never ending circle The “Klan” was a secret organization founded in 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee Started as a social club for former Confederate soldiers returning from the war. Members hid behind robes and masks, and the group terrorized blacks and their Republican allies to keep them from voting. The Klan wanted to return control of state governments to Southern Democrats. C

Ku Klux Klan KKK activities increase throughout GA and the south, and there was evidence that the KKK had prevented many blacks from voting in the presidential election of GA Governor Rufus Bullock asks the federal govt. to help him stop the Klan. Congress then passes “The Georgia Act” in Dec. 1869, and sends troops back to Georgia FOR A THIRD TIME AFTER THE CIVIL WAR!!!!!! GA now has to pass the 15 th Amendment giving all males the right to vote.15 th Amendment C

© 2005 Clairmont Press 15 th Amendment  Ratified in  Specifically gave black males the right to vote  Said that citizens’ right to vote could not be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.  Women’s rights groups were furious that they were not granted the vote at the same time! C

Conditions in Georgia at the end of the war: farms were in ruins homes, railways, bridges, roads were destroyed or in need of repair not enough food banks were closed – Confederate money was worthless the state owed $20,000,000 in war debt More than 40,000 Georgians had died of wounds or disease and many more were crippled and could not work –Almost 20% of while male population aged died in war

The Freedmen Problems of freedmen (former slaves):freedmen –homeless –hungry –uneducated –free for the 1st time –no property or goods Many former slaves feared re-enslavement Most whites had difficulty treating freeman as free persons

The Freedmen’s Bureau Started by U.S. government in 1865 Its job was to help freed slaves and poor whites with basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter The purpose quickly shifts to helping freedmen get an education –Set up 4,000 primary schools –Started industrial schools for jobs training –Started teacher-training schools Not very effective – not given enough money to help blacks xand only 900 Freedmen’s Bureau agents throughout the South C
