 A decrease in quality hemoglobin in the blood to levels below the normal range of 12 to 16 g/dL for women and 13.5 to 18 g/dL for men or in circulating red blood cells.  Anemia has been a significant contributor to deaths in Sri Lanka according to the data from Department of Census and Statistics.  Yet, evaluated trend analysis in Cause of death (CoD) data in relation to anemia is scarce.

 Reveal the trend s in deaths due to anemia in Sri Lanka from 1993 to 2006  Compare the gender distribution in deaths due to anemia

 Data on deaths due to anemia as a cause of death and total deaths in that respective year, from 1993 to 2006 was extracted from the Database at Department of Census and Statistics.  This data was then entered in a Microsoft excel 2010data sheet. Then a percentage contribution of deaths due to anemia was plotted in bar charts.  Then the data was analyzed using SPSS 13

 The percentage of deaths due to anemia has reduced over the years with a 4.7% in 1993 to 2.1% in 2006  The highest contribution of anemia as a cause of death had been a 5.3% in 1996.

 The trend was similar in both genders  But, the contribution of anemia for female deaths was much higher than for men.

 Although our analysis shows a reduction in deaths due to anemia, a detailed analysis of deaths due to anemia is mandatory as majority of these deaths could be prevented.  The different contributions by each gender should be further explored as well as the different trend observed in childhood deaths
